Australia suffers deadliest day of coronavirus pandemic, cases rise

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australia recorded its deadliest day of the coronavirus pandemic on Wednesday and the biggest daily rise in infections in three days, denting hopes that a second wave gripping the state of Victoria may be stabilising.

 

Victoria reported 21 deaths - two more than the previous deadliest days earlier this week - and 410 new cases in the past 24 hours, ending a run of three consecutive days with new infections below 400.

 

A cluster of infections in Melbourne, the Victorian capital and Australia's second-largest city, forced authorities last week to impose a night curfew, tighten restrictions on people's daily movements and order large parts of state economy to close.

 

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said that while the number of cases were trending down, the impact of the strict new lockdown measures was yet to show up in the case numbers.

 

"We all know that a week is not the life cycle of this virus ... and our experts remain firm in the view that this will drive the numbers down," he told reporters.

 

Only Victoria and the country's most populous state, New South Wales (NSW), reported fresh COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, with a total of 428 infections detected in the past 24 hours.

 

The virus has been effectively eliminated outside of Victoria and NSW.

 

Authorities in NSW are scrambling to trace infections linked to a new cluster at a school in Sydney, which has raised fears of more widespread community transmission than previously known in the country's biggest city.

 

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said businesses could face additional restrictions to prevent further clusters developing.

 

"We've given certainly a grace period for businesses, for organisations, for different establishments to step up their COVID safe plans and if they don't do that we will have to go a step further," Berejiklian said at a media briefing.

 

Australia has reported just over 22,000 infections and 352 deaths from the virus, far fewer on a per capita basis than many other developed countries.

That was never going to happen. Announcement from Northern Territory that they won’t be open to NSW, Vic for at least another 18 months, so no hope for international border opening for next few years.

Sure hope they keep it contained.  For one of the wealthiest countries in the world they have a big homeless problem.  If it gets into the community of homeless, watch out.

 

 

The ABS Census is conducted every five years, with the most recent release being for 2016.

 

116,427 people were counted in the Census as being homeless on Census night (up from 102,439 in 2011)

live expectancy is about 80 (years)
25 000 000 : 80 = 312 550 this is about the number of people dying every year in Australia
(about 860 every day )
(may be less because of the immigration- but roughly about that)

in 6 month that s about 156 000 people .

"Australia has reported .... 352 deaths from the virus"
so about 352 deaths in 6 month !!!!

that would be 0.23 % of the normal death rate!!! This is what you call an insignificant number or what would not to be seen in the total number of deaths .
and I would assume, that most of these "corona deaths" are not dying of corona but with corona, having mostly severy other health-problems (cancer, etc).
someone still not understand how propaganda works ?
you can do this counting for nearly every country and getting more or less the same results (Ok, Australia is at the top)

Compare with Belgium: 11 000 000 population, 10 000 corona deaths.

Is that what you want?

All these measures are extraordinary, but the piece de resistance has to be that now police officers can enter homes with neither a warrant nor permission. This is an astonishing violation of civil liberties. Police officers should not be allowed to demand entry to a property without cause or due process. They especially shouldn’t be allowed on “public health” grounds when the median age of Australians who have died from or with Covid-19 is exactly the same as the nation’s average life expectancy - 82 years old.

The indeed extreme anti covid measures have saved thousands of lives. Therefore, with so few people dying, you claim it is proven that the measures were over the top....

 

Do like Belgium (10 000 died out of 11 000 000 inhabitants), and Australia would have about 23 000 people die in stead of 352. That's about 22 648 people never again claiming their civil liberties.

The UK government has recently corrected its own

exaggerated covid death figures. No figures can be

relied upon, and how is that only you know the truth

of this scamdemic? Other figures prove its nothing more than

seasonal flu. Nice to keep an open mind.

Its been yonks since we spoke, I didn't think you'd remember little

No attention was paid to the dramatic consequences this would have

on the economy and society as a whole. Billions of people who where

already living on a day to day basis lost the little they had.

Suicides, anarchy, famine, war etc, Those that took the decisions

where those that had a Covid 19 secure income. But nobody will
