YALA (NNT) - Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre or SBPAC is seeking ways to support over 30,000 Thai laborers who previously returned from Malaysia due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Rear Admiral Somkiat Ponprayoon, Secretary-General of SBPAC is chairman of a committee seeking ways to support the Thai laborers who returned from Malaysia. The Minister-Counselor of the Office of Labor Affairs, Royal Thai Embassy in Malaysia, Consul General in Penang, and Kotabaru also contributed to the meeting via video conferencing.

The Covid-19 pandemic, affected many Thai laborers in the three southern border provinces, all men who used to work in Malaysia. The outbreak resulted in over 30,000 people, returning to Thailand.

The meeting was held to discuss ways to help facilitate the efforts of laborers who want to return to work in Malaysia, especially submitting their work permit applications. The Thai authorities plan to ask Malaysia to extend their work permits from 6 months to 1 year in order to reduce costs and encourage the laborers to work legally.

Rear Admiral Somkiat revealed today that SBPAC listened to the suggestions and opinions from the related authorities in order to find a way to reduce the time it takes to issue the work permits and extend the stay period in Malaysia. When the COVID-19 outbreak is resolved, the laborers are keen to return to work again.
