Red Bull Boss case: Thailand's anti-drink driving foundation show effects of drink, speak of threats

Thailand's anti-drink driving foundation staged a public display of the effects of drinking at a Bangkok hotel yesterday.

Six volunteers who had been drinking at various stages of the previous day were tested to show what the foundation claimed are new techniques that could have helped prosecutors in the case of Vorayuth "Boss" Yoovidhya.

The tests carried out were to show that following the consumption of alcohol it is not standard for each person that alcohol levels lower 15% per hour.

For some people it is 50%. It depends on many factors such as what kind of alcohol is consumed, whether the subject is male or female and their consumption of food.

The foundation also wanted to disprove one claim in the Boss case that an alcohol reading of 389 milligrams made it impossible to drive.

Dr Thaejing Siripanich, the secretary of the foundation, had a person come forward who said they had such a level and could drive.

He said that nationwide 284 people were arrested with an alcohol level of 350-450.

The limit is 50 and people should not drive over this level, he said, but it was clear that those with levels of 400 could still operate a vehicle.

While accepting that the case of drink driving against Boss has now passed the statute of limitations, he said that the foundation's methods should be looked into to inform procedures in other cases.

Boss was driving his Ferrari when senior sergeant Wichian Klanprasert was killed in the Thong Lo area of Bangkok in September 2012.

Whether the Red Bull scion was drinking before or after, as has been claimed, is now a moot point though he is soon to face charges of taking cocaine that have been reinstated, notes Thaivisa.

The anti drink driving foundation has been campaigning in Thailand for 25 years, noted Daily News in their article.

They quoted sources that said on August 6th someone called up to intimate that fuel was as inexpensive as 25 baht a bottle and they could easily burn down their premises. The caller then abruptly hung up.

It was the first time in the foundation's history that they had received such a threat and the police were informed.

Probably some truth regarding their claims of different effects etc., etc., but let's please not make it too complicated. In a nutshell intoxicated people should not be driving, it's dangerous, people kids get killed.

However anything which highlights the drink/drive problem and gets even a few more people on board to change the communities' poor attitudes to the problem is a gain.

I never understand this inane term 'drink driving.'

drink is a verb or a noun but NEVER an adjective.  the adjective is DRUNK.  is this some sort of Thaiglish phrase?

Because some that drink or charged are not drunk. You can use alcohol impaired driving if you like.

No its not a thaiglish phrase, we use that term in australia.

There are many english phrases that make no sense, such as new and improved.

The reality is, of course, completely different again; see the enclosed table:

The term is used in several countries.

Not sure that perfect usage of English is important.

the plus levels over 50 should not be taken in to account ... as we all know they saying say have a drink give you courage ???? so that means no inhibitions and lose all sence of repect .. also as we call it give you wings ... but can we fly ?

It's possible for chronic alcoholics to get to 4 promille, but for mere mortals that starts to be lethal. I lose my legs if I go to 2.5, which hasn't happened in at least two decades, at 1.5 I feel completely plastered already. I prefer to stay under the legal limit while drinking beer, though it's easy to overstep when drinking with friends. Lightweight, I guess.

Never drive at all if there's any alcohol left in the system, take a taxi or let a sober driver drive. Not worth it.

Two women hold first and second place in as Australia's most intoxicated drink drivers! Blood alcohol content (BAC) 0.486 and 0.48 respectively.

Does very much support the views of the foundation Secretary, Dr Thaejing Siripanich.

The testing apparatus shown tests alcohol in the exhaled breath. I think the table refers to blood alcohol levels. Rinse and spit with a strong spirit and blow into one of those breathalysers and you would probably top 400. I have seen people driving here on motorcycles who were unable to stand when they got off the bike.
