A panel of the House Budget Scrutiny Committee has approved, by a slim majority, the Royal Thai Navy’s (RTN) plan to procure two Chinese-made submarines, at a cost of about 22.5 billion baht.

Panel member and Pheu Thai MP for Maha Sarakham province, Mr. Yutthapong Charassathienn, said four members voted in support of the project, while four others opposed it, prompting the panel’s chairman, Mr. Supon Fong-ngam, to cast the decisive vote in support of the project.

The opposition MP said that the panel members who voted for the project are government MPs, namely Chiradet Srivirach and Mrs. Kornnit Ngamsukhonrattana of Palang Pracharat party, Mrs. Siriwan Prasayrchaksatroo of the Democrat party and Chayut Pummakanchana of Bhumjaithai party.

one good use for the sub will be to ferry tourists to coastal destination unaffected from the corona virus unlike those floating pandemic cruise liners, other than that i can see any other use for a sum in this country...

This whole thing is about brown envelops. These subs that the chinese wont even use are disasters waiting to happen. If they were serious they would have bought British, German, Swiss, Japanese or even Russian all make very good electric diesel submarines. Putting your base in the gulf of thailand is bizarre and tactically useless but mind you they will look nice parked up next to the officers mess.

WHY isn't the subcomitee endorsing a few more funds for schools and school lunches and HOSPITALS?

Those subs will just sit at the dock and welcome 'Thai' visitors similar to their AIRCRAFT CARRIER does.

They don't even have any aircraft for the carrier,

What a laugh....... While children go under nourished and under educated and hospitals aren't available for many Thais that need them.....

Having subs (and the aircraft carrier) affect your position in the global military power rankings, guess that's important to military men; not so much to the ordinary Thai in the street.

Or where ALL of that HUGE amount of money could have gone, as in hospitals and schools ... or even something as necessary as water and power assured 24 hours a day.

Wiki say: 'In 2018, the United States spent 3.2% of its GDP on its military, while Saudi Arabia spent 8.8%, Israel spent 4.3%, Pakistan spent 4.0%, Russia spent 3.9%, South Korea spent 2.6%, China spent 1.9%, United Kingdom spent 1.8%, and Germany spent 1.2% of its GDP on defense.[64][65]'

Referring to the 2019 Thailand defence budget: 'Of the two figures, the percentage of GDP figure is especially notable in terms of a relative comparison for where the country is and where the government would like it to be. Though the junta’s modernization plan for the armed forces, dubbed Vision 2026 and green lighted last year, mentions a target of 2 percent of GDP on defense over the next few years, the recent budget reinforces the reality that the country continues to struggle with even getting past 1.5 percent of GDP, not unlike some other neighboring Southeast Asian states.'

Economy going down the pan but there's spare cash around for the military toys.
