Passport For My Son

Featured Replies

I'm in the process of applying for a british passport for my son of 2 years. His mother and I have been married for nearly 4 years and I plan on taking them to the UK for christmas.

I was wondering if there are any disadvantages of him having a british passport, eg; will he still be able to apply for a thai passport ok and have thai citizenship?

I really would like to hear from people who have done the whole process of applying, and have travelled to the UK and back.

Many thanks

Noodles

There is no reason why your son shouldn't hold both Thai and british passports. Indeed, many members have commented on here that their spouses and children freely travel on two documents, leaving Thailand using their Thai passport and entering, for example, the UK on their British passport. The process is simply reversed for the return trip.

One advantage of having Brit passport is being able to travel to a larger range of countries without the requirement of a visa.

There is some debate on here regarding the legitimacy of dual nationality, but it has been O.K since circa 1992 but is deliberately opaque in its wording and hence the ambiguity of peoples responses.

Do a search on here, stating, 'Dual Nationality', you will get a host of responses.

As Scouse says above, posters on here have commented on having dual nationality, my wife being one, Samran in the past has given a run down on the wording.

Good Luck

Get your son a Thai passport already now, in addition to the British passport. The Thai passport is very cheap. Then he should always use his Thai passport to leave and enter Thailand, his British passport to enter and leave the UK and other countries you may be passing through with him.
