I can remember back in the seventies it was all over the media, "robots to replace workers". the general consensus was that it would lead to a 20 hour working week. Never happened unfortunately. Just Luddite scaremongering.

They didn't have computers like now then. Not at all the same situation. If you have not noticed all the jobs eliminated by automation you must be too busy looking at your phone.

A problem in high wage countries seems to be that people without education, or with low education, are too expensive to pay for their working skills. In my Danish home country the outlook for a robotic future has caused serious debate about a citizen-salary paid by the government, because not all citizens can expect a work-life in the future.

On the other hand, many politicians, mainly those on the left side and in center, seems to think that a solution for the automated robotic future, which also includes a higher number of elder retired people living from pension – in Denmark they are even called "the burden of old age" – is a higher number of taxpayers, which can only translate to more working people. I wonder how the politicians expect to solve that Gordian knot, when more and more jobs – of course not all – are taken over by AI and robots...????

Same as in the '70s. By creating new jobs in new areas.

In my home country in the 1970' there was a shortage for workers – importing numerous of low skill migrant workers from Turkey – so no need for government to create new jobs, hard enough to find enough hands for the jobs already created.

Today new jobs require high skills, as many low skill jobs can be replaced by AI and robots. Even a call to customer service in one's bank will be AI within few years, and it's not even a vision, but reality by the biggest bank in the Nordic countries. The first bus-route without a driver has just started, and in Copenhagen all the Metro-trains are already driver-less.

I totally agree with you that overpopulation is a major problem. The statistic facts just proves that some things might not be as bad as some people think they are, or some people predicts the future. A point that is really worth noticing, if climate change is caused by human made CO2, is that of all the various things humans can do to reducere CO2 – from being vegetarians to stop long flights for holidays in Thailand – is a reduction of humans itself the most effective; i.e. reduce the number of people living on the planet by for example not making too many babies...

20190102_impact.jpg.6c840419d5fcaf7d66221f212abb7ec8.jpg

Even more scary it is that when talking reduction of poverty – and a huge number, if not most, of the relative poorer people actually wish to move up and live on Western living standards – we will need three or four planet Earth to fulfill the need for resources...:whistling:

It's significant to me that NONE of the usual talking heads has said that population needs to reduce. It's like they have an agenda to sell electric cars and windmills.........................................

The extinction of humanity can only happen once, but collapse of civilizations have happened again and again.

As for the destruction of the planet, our predecessors didn't have the means for that... they hadn't managed to come up with technology... but in the last 70 years we have done more than our share, at an exponential rate.

There are many things that we don't see but nevertheless exist.

We are just waking up to the massive pollution caused by plastics, but not many are aware of the destruction of soils, most of which wouldn't produce anything without massive amounts of artificial fertilizers, which are making the situation worse...

Take a pill/drink and calm down mate.

I think this saying will maybe help:  "There is nothing to fear - but fear itself."

I cannot recall anyone dieing that said "I wished I had worried more about things beyond my control."

Or you could say "ignore the problems and leave them for the next generations to solve... that will be our legacy".

By the way, fear and awareness are two different things.

You're aware that sustainability has the highest priority in the Thai constitution?

Even the toughest military would not dare to change that, because sustainability has the highest priority in the UN, too.

Op, all I can say is you Baby Boomer lot had it easy. VERY Easy! No war, cheap digs/land, good pensions. I just hope for you beauties that Buddha/karma/reincarnation is not a thing, because in that realm of what goes around comes around you is the fckd! lol

If Karma was real, wishing harm on others would have you dead in an instant.

As a white male boomer, I've had no say in anything that's happened in the world.

Bigoted thinking? This is the problem with the world right now. You cannot say anything without being accused of not being PC. I care not one iota for PC. Means nothing to me. The facts are the facts. Check out these charts, and then tall me about Koresh, Falwell, and the Burmese.

Bigoted thinking is bigoted thinking. Nothing to do with PC or personal computers.  Yeah, I am going to define it as personal computer.

How are you going to slow down a people of a certain faith? A short little guy with a funny mustache did tried that at one time early last century.

Just because people are born in a certain country, it doesn't mean that they take on that country's main religion.  Young people are more likely to be atheist.

Extremism/fundamentalism is the issue.    Bigoted old people is also an issue.

Trouble is the bigoted old people of that religion ,brainwash the young ones and they are the generation of extremists that now bomb and kill us .  you can deny it all you like but it is a religion of intolorance to any other religion. and it seems to be getting worse rather than better.

Who cares about lies told to prostitutes?

It's a cash transaction, there is no relationship, there is no future.

Try telling a prostitute you'll pay her tomorrow, see if she believes you?

What are you on? Who do you think were fighting in Vietnam?

Cheap digs 5555555555555555555555

I earned $17 when I started, for an 84 hour week. Digs were as unaffordable then as now.

Good pensions

:cheesy:

That was the previous generation.

Air travel was too expensive so no overseas holidays.

Petrol was cheaper in real terms though and crime less.

You missed the point about AI robotics. Won't need people to look after us oldies ( if corona or the next virus doesn't kill us all ) as androids will do that.

Don't need taxpayers- just tax goods and services higher as even people on the "universal income" have to use them.

I was able to afford a second hand motorbike. My first car was in Singapore before cars were checked for safety. It was a clapped out Consul with a floor so rusty one would have gone through if stood too heavily. Drove all around Malaya in it.

Cars in NZ became cheap enough in the 70s for me to buy ( I owned a Trekka {and what a mistake that was }, a very nice Ford Escort, a clapped out rusty Mini, a rusty Hillman Hunter, and a Holden Sunbird which was my best car to then though very under powered ), and petrol was cheap till the 90s. Since Japanese imports started the cost of cars has fallen in real terms.

PS, I forgot the model A Ford I bought off a friend. Only made one trip in it before moving overseas and had to sell it. Cost me $200.
