In my home country in the 1970' there was a shortage for workers – importing numerous of low skill migrant workers from Turkey – so no need for government to create new jobs, hard enough to find enough hands for the jobs already created.

 

Today new jobs require high skills, as many low skill jobs can be replaced by AI and robots. Even a call to customer service in one's bank will be AI within few years, and it's not even a vision, but reality by the biggest bank in the Nordic countries. The first bus-route without a driver has just started, and in Copenhagen all the Metro-trains are already driver-less.

I earned $17 when I started, for an 84 hour week. Digs were as unaffordable then as now.

 

Good pensions

That was the previous generation.

 

Air travel was too expensive so no overseas holidays.

Petrol was cheaper in real terms though and crime less.

You missed the point about AI robotics. Won't need people to look after us oldies ( if corona or the next virus doesn't kill us all ) as androids will do that.

Don't need taxpayers- just tax goods and services higher as even people on the "universal income" have to use them.

I was able to afford a second hand motorbike. My first car was in Singapore before cars were checked for safety. It was a clapped out Consul with a floor so rusty one would have gone through if stood too heavily. Drove all around Malaya in it.

Cars in NZ became cheap enough in the 70s for me to buy ( I owned a Trekka {and what a mistake that was }, a very nice Ford Escort, a clapped out rusty Mini, a rusty Hillman Hunter, and a Holden Sunbird which was my best car to then though very under powered ), and petrol was cheap till the 90s. Since Japanese imports started the cost of cars has fallen in real terms.

 

PS, I forgot the model A Ford I bought off a friend. Only made one trip in it before moving overseas and had to sell it. Cost me $200.
