I wonder if those people who constantly defend Pattaya saying that whilst some part are dead the city is thriving in othe areas are actually reading this. Pattaya was sliding downhill for the 5 or 6 years prior to COVID

That nonsense has already been refuted here:

and here:

Please stop repeating it.

the thai mentality amazes me. shes calling for more long weekends. oh yea just put thailand on a 3 day wk for the rest of the year.  even the thais who should be fairly intelligent dont seem to be. and yet again another thai not asking the government to open up for foreigners, so she must think we are dirty, disease carrying people. them sort of people deserve all that they get.

That's not going to happen. It'll just reposition itself for the Thai weekenders and the horde will likely be back too soon.

Just kiss the farang nite scene goodbye.

Catering for Thai weekenders only is not sustainable. There is a groundswell of pressure being exerted on the Government by the big players in the hospitality industry. They are acutely aware that foreign visitors are needed urgently if they are to survive. How things pan out over the next couple of months will be key.

Isn’t it amazing how they didn’t want us farrang in thailand, now it looks like they may miss us. 555. Perhaps if we visit again we will see some genuine Thai smiles!

Merely one of those little TVF tropes for enjoying victimism and Thai bashing. Farang have always been welcome along with all other international tourists. International tourism is of course missed and has been from the beginning. Every day some gov't authority comes up with a new plan for getting them back in, obviously without consulting our numerous experts here. As do other govt's, NOT just Thailand.

Now farang are doubtless missed less, however, than Asian tourists who, all considered, spend more than farang do while committing less crime. Even so, farang may get more lenient treatment re: visa requirements. That's a bitter pill to swallow, so you may want to keep your head in the sand longer.

maybe they should have a "adopt a bar girl" for a month ?

They do it is called Go Fund Me, with revolving boyfriends sending money still to there honey's.  Some are more foolish then you could ever believe. Friend's daughter in Nong Bua Lamphu, who works in Pattaya, has three still on the hook, and they can not wait to get back to see her, still sending money as well as 1 paying monthly for a Mercedes E class she is driving.

Typical ignorant, bigoted, foolish victimism. The subject under discussion is domestic tourism, the only kind permitted at present, last weekend. Even so, She pointed to the complete absence of foreign tourists as a problem. Whassat mean? Good 'nuff. Everyone knows that and everyone's constantly hearing of how the gov't is planning how to resume international tourism when the gov't deems it safe to do so, not when TVF Posters say it's safe.

Yesterday early afternoon I was in the Terminal 21 mall and I was surprised. Compared to the Central Mall there were many people. To me it looked like before Corona. I didn't check how many people were sitting in every restaurant but many people were walking around and the food court was also busy. Also the parking area was pretty full.

I was there yesterday and noticed the same thing.

I did note the pickings on Thaifriendly were down compared to other weekends..... Thank god those pesky Bangkokians only stayed for the long weekend.

Pattaya is never going to bank of foreign retirees for it's income, do you really believe that? The numbers of expats and retirees has been declining for years, the numbers going to Thailand have fallen by over 50% in the last 10 years, only a fool would bet a cities future on that trend. I think you are looking at the future of the cities economic survival based upon what fits you, I assume you are a retired person. The future has to rely on something that has growth and a future, Thailand will not be a retirement country for much longer, the exchange rate, the unwelcome feeling, the stigma,, there are lots of reasons that have been covered on this forum for years. I mean no disrespect but you need to wake up and be realistic. I image the whole city will collapse as it was, the Thai Chinese will buy up the properties at a snip and re invent the place as a Thai/ Chinese playground, especially if Casinos one day get the go ahead. I don't know this for sure but what I do know for sure is the days of old are disappearing never to return.

Do you have any actual statistics showing expats and foreign retirees declining over 50% from 2010 to 2019?  I am not being facetious--I'm curious about how many there were in 2010 vs. 2019.  Everyone I know is still here and I've met new people moving here in those years so I am just curious as I wouldn't have thought there would be that big a drop, or much of a drop at all with the new Asian expats that were coming.

Pattaya has reached the mountain top...been picking up steam sliding down the other side.

Fewer tourists means less crime, less arrogance,  more businesses working to earn your baht.

the sewers will get a breather from all the waste for a few decades and the seas will be free of floaters and swimmers can relax

You're on to something there. Although I think they are still working at max capacity right now - what was over it before just flew straight into the sea.

I’m a little late to the party. Did anyone really think because of Songkran things were going to magically return to tourism levels of 2019 in Thailand with borders still closed - for all intents and purposes? If so, maybe one of you genius’s here can explain how it is possible to flush more than 2 trillion baht in tourism dollars (a conservative estimate) and still get back to normal - without having significant opening of borders? I can’t, and I doubt opening the floodgates is a recipe for success at the moment either. It’s clear a vast majority of folks on this thread don’t have a clue and are not capable of considering the most fundamental economic principles regarding this topic. I certainly don’t have an answer, but I doubt anyone else here does either and being blindly optimistic isn’t going to solve anything.

same. on the french coast in lock down. nice quite.  ,its not just thailand , its the world that is suffering  and business  everywhere.  ,and lets say WHY.  .due to the Chinese  eating wild animals.  ,how many people in the world. lost loved ones ,how many people out work ,how many business  have or will be lost world wide ,streets and bars are empty everywhere

Wild animals? Even the Chinese don't believe that anymore nor do they claim it.

All this talk of Pattaya being busy at the holiday weekend is rubbish, myself and my partner were there Sunday and Monday no great upturn in the people on the streets majority of bars and shops shut the Malls were quiet, ok 2nd road to terminal 21 was busy but only because central road and Klang were closed up to Sukumvit.

People were really enjoying themselves last weekend. Many will be back for regular short weekends.

Maybe so, but under the current situation will the same number of hotels and restaurants be open for their custom next time around? I doubt that the number available will increase.

I was interested in actual statistics for 2010 to 2019.

Being a quiet seaside resort with palm trees and sand and little traffic is what first drew people to Pattaya. Maybe it's going full circle and will be a pleasant place to visit again. Just not what it became, noisy, over-crowded, polluted, full of scams. Which would people prefer?

Are you sure about that? It wasn't much of a beach resort before it became popular for a different reason. Just a fishing village with a dirt road along the beach. No hotels or restaurants.

There are lots of interesting staying options nowadays and Thailand simply has been very less welcoming in past years for unknown reasons so why return In a hurry with a complicated visa structure  no thanks !

Yup but statistics are worthless  here and you know that very well therefore instead ask 3 songtheaw/taxi drivers about foreigners in Thailand! They know and i know and maybe finally u will know it too..

I don't think that visas have anything to do with snowbirds not returning, apart from not being able to do border runs, its all about Covid. Would normally see them drifting back over the next month or so but with the travel complications I just can't see it happening. 2 that I am in touch with have abandoned their plans until October 2021.

If Bkk weekenders is all there is, they'll just have to trim the room numbers to the level needed and the rest go broke- that's capitalism. Anyone wanting socialism best leave LOS.

Farangs are not going to return in anywhere near the same numbers due to restrictions like quarantine, insurance requirements etc. Plus airfares are not going to be cheap. Despite the BS the only thing Pattaya had for farang tourists was golf and girls etc. What two week farang is going to come despite all that just for the girls?

If they want a beach, Samui and Chang etc are better, and for city life Bkk is the best.

They can hope for farangs to come back, but would be better off reinventing themselves for the horde.
