US Embassy dismisses claims it supports protesters

Allegations in the Thai media that the United States is supporting anti-government protesters were firmly rejected by the US Embassy in Bangkok on Thursday.

The allegations stem from photographs of student leader Parit "Penguin" Chiwarak meeting then-US ambassador Glyn Davies on a visit to the embassy in 2016.

The photographs were published on an English-language website called The Land Destroyer Report, which poses as a news outlet to disseminate stories alleging US influence in Thailand. Land Destroyer Report and linked pages were banned by Facebook last year for engaging in “coordinated inauthentic behaviour”.

In its statement, the US Embassy said:

“Ambassadors and Embassy personnel regularly meet with a broad cross section of Thai nationals, not just with students and youth, but also with government, military, business and other leaders. Such meetings do not imply endorsement of any views.”

It went on to reject accusations it was supporting the ongoing protests.

“The United States government is not funding or otherwise providing support to any of the protests in Thailand. The United States does not support any individual or political party; we support the democratic process and the rule of law.

“As friends of Thailand, we encourage all sides to continue to act with respect and restraint and engage in constructive dialogue on how to move the country forward.”

That is not going to happen under the current military government.

Thinking about history, the United States does not admit publicly that it supports protesters or undemocratic leaders. It seems pointless to ask.

That did not stop a whole posse a thais from marching on the US Embassy in 2014.

There's the official position...and then there's what the people actually think.  And then, there's probably with a lot of variation in the popular sentiment, like on most topics.

When it suits.

They support dictatorial and murderous regimes too, as evidenced throughout their short history.

MBS would agree with you.

I could not agree more and that kind of statements is so silly. I have met the guy along with Jackie, his wife, on several occasions. Although people could have sworn that we were buddies or at least in their inner circle, they would have been wrong. It is part of their duties to talk and be nice to everyone and the "today's student leader" was not as prominent in 2016

Silly games

God, no wonder the term "fake news" resonates so soundly these days. Glyn was a Democratic appointee, with all its left leaning aspirations -- and she's long gone. Today, we have a real right leaning State Dept --under Pompeo. That with him at the helm -- it's ludicrous to believe the US, thru its embassy here, is giving any aid or comfort to any seditionists.

I can't imagine the US supporting any democracy movement under the current admin. Orange man has proved to be a strong and loyal supporter of despots the world over.

Orange man? What have you been drinking? Orange flavored Vodka? If you want to share your comments in an adult and understandable fashion, perhaps using a proper name would help.

But Trump himself often attaches denigrating nicknames for rivals. Guess that's alright.

The Embassy's statement reflects, what an embassy is supposed to do for its home country, in this case the US and D.C. This - however - is what applies to the official statement only. Reporting back to head quarters, getting instructions from there - basically an extended mouth piece.

If and what they really did will never be disclosed but a country which managed to run a secret war clocking billions of dollars in Cambodia and Laos over years ...... considers this domestic row a minor operation - if at all.

Having said that, a picture of 2016 does not speak anything politically as the subject in 2016 was slightly different to what is simmering now in 2020 - me thinks ????
