Fisheries Dept. Encourages Fishermen To Quit Trawl And Push Net Fisheries

Featured Replies

Thais News:

The Department of Fisheries encourages fishermen to quit trawl and push net fisheries in the Gulf of Thailand. They can report themselves to the department in order to receive assistance from the authority from May 9th – 17th.

Acting Director of the Central Marine Fisheries Research and Development Center, Chinda Phetkamnerd (จินดา เพชรกำเนิด) reveals that the Fisheries Department has launched a campaign against trawl and push net fisheries as they have caused ecological damages to the gulf. According to the acting director, trawl and push net fishermen, especially in Prachuap Khirikhan, Chumphon, and Surat Thani provinces, have caught too many marine animals.

The acting director informs that the fishermen need to bring documents including identification cards, house registrations, boat registrations, and fishing gear licenses, when reporting themselves to the department.

About time. Doubt it will make a difference, but at least its an acknowledgement from the govt that there is actually a problem.
