Image: Sanook A Facebook post from a house owner called "Maruay Teekatanasakul" created a stir on Thai social media. The owner had left his property empty for four years. But when he came back to check that all was well he found out that the people next door had had a key cut and were using it as if they owned it. He said that they had run an extension cord from their house into his so they had electricity. In addition there was lots of damage to fittings and things like air-con and pumps had gone missing. In a subsequent post he said that he had waited for several days to sort things out with the neighbor because he didn't want to make trouble as they had lots of children. However, after failing to see them or get satisfaction he had now resolved to report the matter to the local police. A fire, burst water pipe, or any other number of things could've totally destroyed the home. Wife's niece and her Swedish husband had a nice house built and had a house built for the parents. They both work in Sweden and so go back and forth. Father in law broke in to their house and started doing things and taking things. His son now 'lives' in the place. Needless to say, the husband never goes back to the village and the niece is always bending the wife's ear about the niece's brother. I have decided never to leave anything useful or valuable in the garage. Always lock doors and set alarms. Breif the dogs on what to do if a stranger calls. Have CCTV. That, though, didn't stop the little <deleted> referred to above jumping over the wall and wandering around the outside of the house at 6am one morning. 12 dogs, just barked, as they knew him, but saw he wasn't entering as normal. Stealing is a way of life for some people. And when authorised to borrow something, some people fail to return it in the condition it went out, if at all.... That said, I am torn. Empty property when there are homeless people, hurts my civic pride. GreasyFingers Posted October 4, 2020 Share Posted October 4, 2020 It just seems to be the Thai way. My wife and FIL have taken over about 1/2 rai of adjoining land for a vegetable garden. I cleared it to protect our house from fires and also snakes and they immediately took it over with no shame.
