Popular Post webfact
Infected French woman: Virus found on gym equipment at her quarantine hotel Picture: Sanook The Covid-19 fan page on Facebook announced that traces of the virus had been found on gym equipment in a fitness room at the hotel in Samut Prakan where a French visitor was staying. The 57 year old woman subsequently tested positive for Covid-19 after falling unwell on Koh Samui. She had stayed at the hotel from September 30th to October 15th, reported Sanook. The media said the positive test on the gym equipment was one of seven samples taken at the quarantine hotel. An further investigation is underway at the ASQ (alternative state quarantine) facility. Sixty seven of sixty eight staff there have tested negative as have all those who were in close contact with the woman who flew in from Limoges, France. These include her two family members, a friend who picked them up, and 12 passengers and crew on a flight. People can call 1422 if they have concerns. Popular Post daiwill60
So many questions about this report. Only 7 samples were taken, why so few in a large building? Did the woman actually use the gym? Was the virus present in the gym before she became infected, or did she become infected elsewhere and then subsequently infect the gym? Did she become infected on Koh Samui or during her passage to Koh Samui? I guess we will never certainly know, but we will carry on with lockdowns and quarantines nevertheless. Popular Post Oldie
The other question is why was she allowed to enter Thailand. She is from a high risk country. Are they not blocked? 3
Popular Post Saltire
I've seen in other places that she is in fact a Thai citizen with dual (French) nationality, but not sure if that's the case. Can never be sure. 'Sixty seven of sixty eight staff there have tested negative' so is there one more positive? Why are so many articles and reports on here so badly written, is it deliberate? They generate more questions than they give 'facts'.

She is from a high risk country. Are they not blocked? Only from the Special Tourist Visa. The Thai media has taken to describing all foreign arrivals as "tourists". She was nto a tourist. In fact some sources suggest she had dual Thai/French nationality. FWIW the part of France she came from has very low COVID rates.

It is well known that the virus can live on inanimate objects, especially indoors. Gyms are especially high risk environments due to tnedency of peopkle to grunt, breath hard etc while working out. This is why gyms were closed during lockdowns and among the last places allowed to reopen. The timing of her infection makes it 99% sure her infection occurred while in quarantine. Obviously the original source could have been of any nationality who used the gym. This is really not relevant, as is her visa status What is relevant is that quarantine, meant to contain infection, actually spread it in this instance. I would expect to see new guidance issued to ASQ facilities about use of gyms. 10

natway09
I also heard the the lady in question is Thai, but married to a French dude. Maybe she travelled on her French PP but that in itself is strange as even if the Thai PP expired she would still be allowed entry. Some smoke & mirrors here methinks

If all other Guests were allowed to used the same piece of Equipment, then there is no surprise that there is an infection. Quarantine should mean Isolation, with no access to common ground as used by other Guests IE Gym, Swimming Pool Etc This incident also brings into question the ASQ facilities ability ( or otherwise ) to completely adhere to Covid restrictions with regard to cleaning and Sanitising.

ronaldo0
Did she fly from Bkk to samui ? If so have they tested everyone on that flight and everyone that boarded the plane she was on after ? Surely if it can stay on gym equipment it would be able to stay on plastics in a plane etc ?

Sametboy2019
More to the point. If the Gym is supposed to be the point of infection why after her travelling to Samui is there still covid on the equipment? It should be disinfected everyday. People are paying top money to these hotels and they cant even make them safe! Edited October 26, 2020 by Sametboy2019 s

I ask myself if the Thai government is aware of the kind of Farang tourists that could come here. Many don't care about protection, some even will aggressively refuse it and some even like to make Corona parties. It is a completely different mentality than Thai people have. There is a reason why they have so many cases there. And I don't believe that this quarantine idea will work 100 percent. We saw it at this lady. Just to clarify - I am a Farang too. 3 2
