I used to sell capital equipment before the single market came into being and for a small item freight forwarding charges could exceed the cost of the goods. I learned to do the paperwork myself to reduce costs and around 1980 I took 6 small orthopedic ovens in the back of a car down to Brive near the Spanish border. Customs inspection is a different ballgame for unusual equipment and leaving the customs union will be a step back in time.

Read the FT article and you'll see that the fact is that Japan signed the deal because it wants to maintain the split of it's European manufacturing between the UK and EU. For that to happen will require a UK/EU trade deal of some sort. If we end up with no deal then the Japan/UK deal will only be worth the crumbs left over from the Japan/EU deal.

 

Assuming Johnson's reneging on his WA hasn't put the Japanese parliament off completely, that is.

Indeed the Japanese automobile industry in the UK (the "transplants") are there for the European market. 

 

Anyway even if there is a deal for the automotive industry, electric cars production in the UK won't be viable.. And anyway what will hurt most is the services sector
