'It'll be carnage': British companies dread a Brexit border breakdown

"Customs brokers say the cost of paperwork could exceed the cost of moving small consignments. Completing a typical export declaration can require more than 50 pieces of information on transport, commodity codes and value."

Back to the bad old days.

I used to sell capital equipment before the single market came into being and for a small item freight forwarding charges could exceed the cost of the goods. I learned to do the paperwork myself to reduce costs and around 1980 I took 6 small orthopedic ovens in the back of a car down to Brive near the Spanish border. Customs inspection is a different ballgame for unusual equipment and leaving the customs union will be a step back in time.

Yes, but you didn't have a blue passport then, did you!

I would suggest a deal would have been done already if it wasn't for the French DEMANDING UK waters, the UK's sovereign territory, and YOU and others here think it's the UK's fault ........Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.....????

I wonder if all this " Fish War " is not a smart move from France/Europe.

After all   Talleyrand and Machiavelli  were "Europeans".

Giving the U.K. the impression that the fishing rights are so extremely important for France/Europe ( when in fact it represent economically not much ), and then on the very last minute, giving in.

Of course as counterpart of this "oh so important giving in", they will expect from the U.K. something similar.

This " something similar " being than something really economically important.

The art of negotiating.

I would have thought you EU blokes would be happy having a red passport printed anywhere in your club.....????

After all, us UK folk are quite happy to deal with the EU, even with printing, we're just splendid fellows......????

But, when it comes to our territory, that is a different matter, as you have found out.....????

If the Remainers Project Fear was to believed, all trade would immediately cease anyway and there will be no movement of any goods in either direction. So which does Chicken Licken really think it will be?

You’re  two hundred percent right Loiner, it’s the bloody truckers fault. Genius, LMAO.

You have not gone anywhere near proving your point as you still cannot say what your 'event' was, let alone when and where it occurred.

If anything you say is remotely true then a person of your ego and arrogance could not help themselves; you'd have to rub my face in it by not just saying what the 'event' was but providing the 'ample evidence' to this board that you claim to have provided to 'interested parties.'

That all you can do is repeat your nonsense, and are now throwing in the US ambassador and the White House, means that your fantasies have moved beyond the amusing into an area of concern about your mental state. Seek psychiatric help; now.

Having been 'hoisted by your own petard' I'll respond only insofar as to point out the irony in the fact that Brookwood(!) has long since closed....

Brookwood? The US ambassador?

Are you trying to say that your magnificent prediction was of an event which happens every year in May at the American military cemetery in Brookwood?

So you managed to predict an annual event which actually occurred at least three months before you made your prediction!

BTW, Memorial Day this year was 25th May, and due to lockdown the service, due to be held on Sunday 24th, like all such was conducted virtually: Virtual Memorial Day Ceremonies Confirmed

Quote

The ABMC had already confirmed that all of their memorial sites, including the Cambridge American Cemetery and Brookwood American Cemetery in the UK, would be closed during the lockdown.

Seems I know far more about what happened, and is happening, where I live than you do from your perch!

You say you didn't get it Mavideol, does that imply you understand the humour now?

But the fact is, Japan has come out and told "you" and the world that they are creating greater ties with the UK after the UK EU exit. They let "you" and others know early...

Read the FT article and you'll see that the fact is that Japan signed the deal because it wants to maintain the split of it's European manufacturing between the UK and EU. For that to happen will require a UK/EU trade deal of some sort. If we end up with no deal then the Japan/UK deal will only be worth the crumbs left over from the Japan/EU deal.

Assuming Johnson's reneging on his WA hasn't put the Japanese parliament off completely, that is.

Now I would suggest that Japan, one of the greatest economies in the world, saw the EU was trying to stiff the UK, unlike some anti-Brits that write here, plus, the Japanese understand the actions of the UK government in dealing with the EU.

Not anti Brit; anti Brexit. That is because I believe the best hope for our future wellbeing was to remain a member of the EU. A hope dashed by those who fell for Vote.Leave's lies.

As this Japanese deal shows the best we can now hope for is to sweep up the crumbs not wanted by the EU!

I am surprised that you, a British bloke, is not rejoicing that a world financial power has come forward to join hands with the UK, why is that...?

This is better than nothing; but a whole lot worse than we could have had if we had remained within the EU.

A diversionary twist 49, but after your latest ad holmium in which you declared that I should...

I felt I should point out the irony in the fact that Brookwood had closed.

(If you didn't know that ever existed there's little wonder you were unable to unearth anything else in your immediate vicinity!)

@evadgib, you brought in the US ambassador and Brookwood as 'proof' of your prediction. The only connection between them is the Memorial Day service. Of course, now that you've discovered that it's an annual event which this year, as every year, happened in May, three months at least before your prediction, you have to make up an excuse to pretend you meant something else.

I am well aware that Brookwood hospital closed; in 1994! The site is now occupied by a housing estate, a Sainsbury's and Wat Phra Dhammakaya Thai Buddhist temple.

I thought, though, that you were boasting of foreknowledge of events which were going to happen; not one which happened last May and another one 26 years ago!

Doesn't this problem consist both ways?

Indeed the Japanese automobile industry in the UK (the "transplants") are there for the European market.

Anyway even if there is a deal for the automotive industry, electric cars production in the UK won't be viable.. And anyway what will hurt most is the services sector

Quote

The professional and business services sector is vital to the UK’s economy, adding an estimated £224.8 billion to the UK economy and providing some 4.6 million jobs. This sector includes advertising, legal services, market research, accountancy, audit, architecture, engineering, PR and management consulting.

Quote

Future UK-EU arrangements on trade in services will have a big impact on this sector, particularly smaller operators. This inquiry has shown that the needs of this hugely important sector have been overlooked by the Government during negotiations.

 "The event I missed?"

In reality; the event which never happened.

You know there was no such event, I know there was no such event, Uncle Tom Cobley and all know there was no such event.

'Tis you who's digging a deeper and deeper hole for yourself with your continued pretence of knowledge you so obviously do not have. You're the Cliff Clavin of this board.

The last word on this, for now, is yours.

My last word was two months ago; I stepped away when my point had been proven. Since then you have pursued me across multiple boards like a Crufts champion at an arrse sniffing contest & you're still in denial as to your own pomposity & underestimating the intelligence of others. Had you been a 'normal' poster I may well have told you what you had missed.
