Parents of American who killed himself after shooting spree in Pattaya stuck in quarantine in Bangkok

A 25 year old American man shot himself at a condo in Pattaya after a series of violent incidents.

His parents had just arrived after they heard about his marital problems. They have been informed of his death while they were undergoing quarantine in Bangkok.

Trouble started two weeks ago when Michael, 25, held a knife to his Thai wife's throat and she said she was leaving him

Sanook reported that the American was a narcotics user and had underlying health problems.

Then on Monday at 4.30 pm he was at a Huay Yai shooting range. Ten bullets had been loaded into a 9mm gun for him to fire.

After firing twice at a target he pointed the gun at the trainer shooting him twice. Sanook did not report if he was hit or injured.

He then fled towards Sukhumvit Road and went to the Jomtien area where he shot twice at volunteer forces who were pursuing him.

He managed to escape.

At 11.30pm he shot in the air after an argument with a young person outside his condo.

He then shot at police and missed but hit a news photographer who was injured.

He then holed up in his condo room as police sealed off the area.

A friend came in to try and talk him round but when police decided to go in two hours later they found he had killed himself.

A source told Sanook that Michael's parents had decided to come to Thailand after he was stranded in the country due to the pandemic and was suffering marital problems.

They arrived two days ago and were quarantining in Bangkok when they heard news of their son's death.

This is awfully sad, and on compassionate grounds I would say let them out to deal with this.

I wouldn't be surprised that if they followed a certain faith that is beyond criticism and requires its dead to be buried within 24 hours they would be allowed out.

How'd they get in to the country so quickly?

It seems to be a mystery. But obviously much more people than reported in the news are arriving already from foreign countries - even high risk ones. We only hear about it if there was a crime or a severe Corona incident that made it to the news. At least this is my feeling in the meantime.

I would say please do not as infections are high in the USA.... and arranging a funeral would expose quite a few. Such a pity the guy could not hold on for a few weeks....

Please do not "excuse" them from Quarantine. Whoever suggested this is just stupid.

This is why the US, Europe & the UK  is in such trouble. The virus does not understand compassion. GET IT

My heart goes out to them at their time of bereavement, but a funeral can be arranged for after their confinement.

The whole circumstances are sad but the lad must have "lost" something

A tragedy to go off the rails like this. Only 25yrs. So sad for all involved and especially his parents. Curious though how the parents were able to enter the country.

RIP you have found peace. Sad for his parents.

Sad for everyone that had any kind of contact with him..... fruit cake comes to mind.

I don't get it. Back home... I understand... but here?

This is the land of plenty and with the dating sites now available a 25 year old guy could be up and running in no time.

Mental illness is such a sad affair in the world today and it doesnt seem to be getting any better.

Hard one for the parents. The drugs must of over road his decision making for reason.

If the parents could come to Thailand there were transport options, which means its highly likely he was not ‘stranded’ but didn’t want to return.

It looks like the parents came to try and help their son who was clearly going off the rails. Sadly due to quarantine they were unable to do anything in time.

It must be excruciating for the parents who are now both stuck in quarantine, having been unable to leave and help their son who is now dead - so tragic.

I’m sure this isn’t the first time someone has stolen guns from a firing range for nefarious reasons.
