BANGKOK (NNT) - Depression is a mental health issue which has been gaining more attention in Thai society. For Mental Health Week this year, the Department of Mental Health has launched a monitoring forum for depression, raising awareness of the illness which requires cooperation from all sides to help patients.

The Department of Mental Health has joined hands with the Psychiatric Association of Thailand and the Royal College of Psychiatrists of Thailand to stage a forum on the cooperation of partner agencies on the prevention of depression and risk reduction for the general public.

Dr Pichai Ittasakul, a representative from the Psychiatric Association of Thailand, said depression is caused by the overworking of the region of the brain associated with thoughts. The condition affects emotions, thoughts, and the livelihood of the patients.

He said some patients are found to develop this condition after too much information received from social media, while the association has been training psychiatrists and members of the public on how to take care of persons with depression, and depression prevention.

Dr Burin Suraaroonsamrit, a representative of the Royal College of Psychiatrists of Thailand said treatment for patients with depression requires an assessment by a doctor. The royal college has issued guidelines advising all its psychiatrists to periodically meet patients at home to prevent them from harming themselves.

The Department of Mental Health’s Deputy Director General Dr Samai Sirithongthaworn, said today the department is responsible for finding the best medicine to treat patients with depression, as well as developing a disease surveillance system that starts with patient screening, and continues on to treatment and caretaking.

The department is constantly improving relevant knowledge bases for medical professionals, which is extended to village health volunteers and local health promotion hospitals, giving more people the right knowhow, concerning the proper care of patients with depression.

So, don't think so much.

When I first saw the post headlines I thought that this forum was set up to discuss how to help people who had too many watches, working out which watches to wear every day was so depressing  Ah I thought this idea came from a deputy prime minister. I hope the forum helps him.
