Thanks to every one for all your input. May good leads and pointers to look for and follow up.

As regards to quality of sound, I have a SD card full of "golden oldies" mainly downloaded from YouTube that I sometimes belt out at full volume when alone in the car and the quality of sounds seems OK to me, so sound quality is not a priority for me.

:jap:

Get a cheapo phone with WiFi & Bluetooth, plus a 1Mb/s SIM card. Then the world of Music can be picked up from anywhere in the World eg Caroline Flashback or Gold UK. Bluetooth to your car radio, or thru heaqdphones, or hifi. Robert's your Dad's brother.

You Tube vids are usually very low quality. Try getting music albums via torrents/Bittorrent in better mp3 quality ie 360. Don't bother with flac as they take up too much room, and sound just the same.

Over to you Eindhoven!   LOL

I think all modern phones have WiFi capabilty and Bluetooth. Impossible to find a Smartphone without. Though of course doesn't mean that his car stereo has Bluetooth capability. But an inexpensive audio lead will remedy that.

What is a 1Mb/s SIM card? Perhaps you can link to such a thing? Is there a benefit to seeking out such a thing?

There is no such thing as "mp3 quality ie 360". Perhaps you mean MP3 @ 320kbps.

"mp3 quality ie 360"(sic) and FLAC might sound the same to you, but not perhaps to people with non-defective hearing. You have already admitted to having relatively poor hearing because of an alleged 40 years of playing live music.

So no need to superimpose your ailments on to others, presenting your statements as fact. They are not. If they were there would be no sense in having lossless formats at all.

There is no way that MP3, a lossy format that removes part of the music in order to be able to achieve a smaller file size and FLAC, a lossless format sound the same; unless you have defective hearing. We have already established that you do. By your own words and your inability to distinguish between the same music encoded via MP3 and a lossless format.

Back to you...

Yes it would have been easy to Google for an answer, but questions keep forums alive and better still get feedback from actual users in your area.

Where do you get your  music from now?

The Modern equivalent to Carrying a Walkman and Tapes (or CD’s) is an MP3 Player - however, you’ll still need to interface the MP3 player to a computer to load Music and Podcasts.

By far the best option depends on your proximity to a Wifi Signal while you are outside chilling in your hammock.

IF within Wifi range the best suggestion is the Smartphone (without a Sim) - you can use Spotify and stream Podcasts and Music till your hearts content.

IF outside of a Wifi range the best suggestion remains a Smartphone (with a Sim) and use Spotify.

In limiting yourself to a ‘modern day walkman equivalent’ that isn’t a Smart phone you removing the flexibility and live streaming capability, the multitude of potential apps that a smart phone offers.

If you want flawless sounds there are apps which also deliver this: Such as Spotify paid membership and even TIDAL, which a lot of people will not have heard of, but streams lossless music.

I have TuneIn radio pro it cost me €4:90 some years ago,a one off payment that removed any advertisements. It gives me access to music, sport and pod casts from around the globe.Right now listening to radio Paradise eclectic mix, playing through my new Marantz PM7000N network integrated amp.I have it wired with a network cable into a modem and an optic cable for the TV.I use my phone or tablet and Bose Q35 11s via Bluetooth when I am kicking back on my balcony.I have Spotify of course but am thinking of dropping it and try Tidal or one of the other stations that have flac and lossless streams I will trial them first. It might be a bit of a data killer to use them on the move but I don't listen away from home.A basic phone even one with with 32gb will do as long as you can expand the memory,a memory card may cost more than the phone! But really MP3?

You are really dragging this thing out, as you do with anything tech or computer orientated and to which you think you have superior knowledge.

By 1Mb/s SIM, I meant one which has a package which can connect/download at 1Mb/s, as most other readers will have understood.

I apologise for mistyping 360 instead of 320.

I wouldn't say my hearing is 'relatively poor'' or 'defective, as YOU seem to have established. rather normal for a person of my age. Not knowing your advancement in years, I must assume that you have perfect hearing. However it would be interesting if you took the test suggested by a member earlier and let us all know how you do.

I am not 'superimposing my ailments' on others, what a silly statement, and I think you meant ímpose', and which statements have I presented as facts please. I know what I have said is true.

I have Tune in, Global Radio app, as well as BBC Sounds and Caroline Flashback. None of these stream above 320 kb/s default being 128. Hardly flac quality.

Why do you need to expand the memory if you are listening to a stream please?

Erm...no. Dragging it out is you somehow being upset that I can hear the differences clearly and you cannot. You handed over for me to comment:

Remember?

So if you didn't want a discussion, perhaps rein it in the next time.

I meant 'superimposing', not "imposing". No need for you to try to tell me what I mean. I meant what I wrote.

Perhaps since you refused to answer my question properly, I will rephrase it... why should the OP limit himself to a SIM that has a maximum bandwidth of 1 Mbps?

Perhaps you can explain why anyone should do such a thing and why you would recommend that someone should do such a thing.

Whilst you might consider your hearing "normal", there is no doubt that MP3 compression removes parts of the music it considers that you might not be able to hear anyway.

You cannot hear the difference. That means that you likely have an early high frequency drop-off in your hearing. You may also have the same in other frequency bands.

For me, it's not a question of using high quality equipment to hear and feel the difference. It is abundantly clear to me, even on my laptop.

You simply cannot hear nor perceive the differences. Age is irrelevant to this discussion. You can either perceive the differences or you cannot. You cannot.

You appear to think that it is some kind of contest that you need to win. That's unfortunate.

Now you are pushing me to take a test for no good reason other than some sort of peeing contest. If I know I can already hear the difference having Lossy(320 kbps or VBR MP3) and Lossless(FLA, APE) copies of exactly the same media in my possession.

The point being, that even if I detected all correctly, you'd still come out with some slightly bitter comment, as the reason for your arguing appears to be because you feel slighted, as opposed to any intelligent or reasoned discussion.

We can just leave it as YOU being unable to hear the difference, rather than you misinforming others that there is no difference.

Where did he write that you need to expand the memory if listening to a stream??

I read him describing his usage and I read him stating that any Smartphone will do for the OP. OP doesn't only stream, so it may be useful to be able to extend storage as and when.

Nothing about expanding memory when streaming.
