Arriving in Thailand, 1st Covid-Test positive, what now

I am about to book my ASQ etc.

I was just wondering if anyone knows what would happen if - after arriving and doing the first Covid-Test - that test came back positive...

 

- Can I remain in the ASQ-Hotel for the next 14 days and then leave?

- Will I be "escorted" to the partnering hospital and have to stay there for 30 days (I read somewhere that is the period of necessary isolation, like the french woman)?

You would be taken to a hospital and would have to stay in it until you had recovered and passed the covid 19 test. There is no fixed length of stay to leave the hospital.

The way I understand it is that positive cases are immediately transferred to the hospital associated with the ASQ hotel, where the patient remains for a minimum of 14 days regardless of any further tests that are negative or when in the original quarantine they tested positive, after the initial 14 days in hospital, they would only be released after testing negative twice.

I imagine so, little point in having it if not, although the cost of the hospital stay would depend on the ASQ hospital involved, others being far more costly that some, if the patient develops bad symptoms and requires ICU, then the cost can mount up quickly.

Compulsory hospitalisation and compulsory standardised Thai treatment with a barrage of drugs administered daily, frequent blood tests, no contact with anyone who is not in full PPE and no release until you've recovered. Needless to say, it does not sound like fun.

You are immediately transferred to a hospital to complete the quarantine period and until cleared of COVID infection.  

 

And if your medical/COVID coverage requires you to pay the hospital bill and then you file a claim for reimbursement then be prepared to pay a healthy hospital bill out of your own pocket....then you go chasing reimbursement with your insurance company.

What I do not know is whether any part of the pre-payment for meals and accommodation in ASQ is then applied to the hospital bill for room and meals. Check the wording on your ASQ agreement/booking. All ASQs have a hospital affiliation.

 

You are required to have insurance that covers COVID treatment when you come. That would presumably pay the bill but depending on the insurer might be direct billing between hospital and insurer or you might have ot front the money and claim for reimbursement. Something to consider when choosing insurer.

I was informed by my Thai health insurer that they have been seeing an average bill for their insured of between 200K THB -and 300K THB bills for the stay in just an isolation room at the hospital without treatment.  My agent said the sad thing is that these folks also had either a 200K or 300K deductible and had to pay out of there pocket.  He indicated they had an actual insured that had to be treated and was in the hospital for 2 months with a bill of around 3 Million THB, so that 100K USD policy you need just barely covered that one.

Note as well that I've heard of two cases of people who, once tested negative and released from hospital, have been told to self-isolate for a further 1 month at home. One case was the French lady on Samui, the other is a friend of a friend.

I dont wish to scaremonger but it has occurred to me that the ASQ testing system could be wide open to abuse by the affiliated hospitals testing ASQ hotel guests. It could be a nice little earner for them to falsely claim positive test results and have those guests admitted to their hospital for further quarantine, treatment and tests. Even if the tests were carried out independently of the hospitals, knowing how brown envelopes permeate Thai society, I would still be wary.

The OP posted a hypothetical question.

And the initial 'status' would have to have been tested negative in order to receive the initial embassy COE

The COE is issued before the covid test.

There is no indication of any such thing taking place.

 

Positive cases get a great deal of scrutiny from Public Health officials. If there was an unusual  number from any particular ASQ that would immediately trigger further investigations. Not going to happen.

 

Only a very, very small minority of people are testing positive in ASQ

I'm not sure I remmeber hearing about this? There are, it seems, ~ 3 - 10 new daily cases found in quarantine, but hospitalizations do not increase accordingly.

I do not think that can be correct, considering that every single Positively Tested Case makes headlines (e.g. the French lady, the Korean soldier, ..).

The government publishes these numbers daily. Today's figure is five.

 

Foreigners travelling from: Germany (1)
Thais: Sweden (1), Iran (1), Kenya (1), Switzerland (1)

 

 

Yesterday it was three, day before five, etc. Been as high as the mid/low-twenties.

 

Hospitalizations at 99, and those keep going down so suspect that ASQ-positive cases do not qualify as hospitalizations unless admitted? They remain in the quarantine catgeory if moving to the hospital/ASQ "facility". Just a guess,

Thanks for posting the chart.  Had no idea that there were that much daily cases tested positive.  I understood from other posts that when tested positive in ASQ off you go to Hospital.  But these positive ones must be in some kind of admin covid Purgatory, as the Hospitalization figure is too low for them being included in it.

The hospitals have "alternative hospital quarantine" facilities that are not included in those admitted for treatment for Covid-19. Also in the AHQ are those who enter Thailand for medical treatment unrelated to Covid-19.

Minimum 3 weeks in hospital even if you had no symptoms.

 

2 weeks to carry out the full isolation - and then you will need 2 negative tests 5 days apart. 

 

Failure to get 2 negative tests you could be in there for a long time.
