It takes 24 hours to be 'considered' for a visa - in my case an ME marriage visa. But (so I've read) a month to be 'considered' for a one-year extension, even though these are granted almost without exception.

Does anyone know or have a theory why it takes 30 days longer to grant an extension than it does a visa? Just curious. Okay, the extension application has to be sent somewhere else to be 'considered', but still.......

You answered yourself - it has to be approved elsewhere and by a group.  There is also a home visit often required prior to that decision.

Its just part of their standard process timeline and to allow sufficient time for any additional checks. As you say its rare for anyone to get rejected after submission but on occasions others have reported being asked for other documents after they have submitted to the local IO before they submit to their division. Also some office may on want to make a home visit again very rare. Im sure the approval comes back earlier than 30 days you can always call the office after a couple of weeks to check. I got my approval this Monday and my under consideration was actually 32 days.

Think yourself lucky.

When I first did this many years ago it took 8 months of going backwards and forwards to immigration.

They have since speeded up the process.

All marriage extensions have to go to Bangkok CW to be approved. As mentioned above the month also allows time for a home visit should it be required.

Actually, marriage extensions go to Division headquarters which is only Bangkok for immigration offices in central region.

I think they go to the Divisional Headquarters for whichever Division your immigration office falls under, rather than all to Bangkok

Edit: Just beat me to it @BritTim

You are right but in the past - when the 30 day under review was first in place - they all had to come to Bangkok so is likely the reason for the amount of time.

Bangkok Barry is correct....  Non-Immigrant O extensions are signed off (after their ‘under approval period’) by the Local ‘main’ Immigration office and do not need to be sent to be signed off at Immigration Division 1 at Chaeng Wattana.

There are a lot of immigration offices in each area and the reason for the 1 month stamp is to ensure that every application that is received at division headquarters from each immigration office can be accessed. House inspections are done by the local immigration investigation team. As division headquarters do not know how many extension application there are going to be at any period of time that have a blanket 1 month time frame.

Only division 1 for Bangkok and division 3 for the central region are located at CW.

Division 4 for the NE is in Khon Kaen, Division 5 for north is in Chiang Mai and Division 6 for the south is in Hat Yai.
