LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is self-isolating after coming into contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19, a fresh setback after infighting amongst his top advisers plunged Downing Street into chaos last week.

Johnson, who was admitted to hospital with the novel coronavirus earlier this year, is well and does not have any symptoms, a spokesman for the prime minister said on Sunday.

"He will carry on working from Downing Street, including on leading the government’s response to the coronavirus pandemic," the spokesman said. "The prime minister will follow the rules and is self-isolating."

Johnson met with a group of lawmakers in Downing Street on Thursday that included Lee Anderson, a Conservative Party member who subsequently developed COVID-19 symptoms and has tested positive.

The British leader had been hoping to seize back the initiative after last week's drama in Downing Street.

Johnson's office said on Friday that Dominic Cummings, the prime minister's most powerful adviser and a fellow veteran of the Brexit referendum, will stop working for him next month.

Negotiations with Brussels over a post-Brexit trade deal are reaching a climax ahead of the Dec. 31 expiry of Britain's transition period with the European Union. Johnson also has to decide his next move on England's coronavirus restrictions after he ordered a four-week lockdown that is due to end on Dec. 2.

Huh? I thought when you had it, you would be immune afterwards. New strain or so?

There's believed to be some level of immunity for people such as the PM who've already contracted the virus...  But just how long that immunity lasts, and how strong it is in any given person, are issues that remain somewhat unknown/unsettled.  It's been some months since the PM was hospitalized previously.

But the press reports don't say he's caught it again - just the fact that he has been in contact with an infected person.

So he could be immune but when in contact with an + one, he could be infectious to other people?

At least Boris is Isolated since his Brexit campaign from main Europe.

Sad to see that some parts of Britain's population still follow his erratic ways.

Media seem to be making a meal of this already, with the Telegraph saying that his "reset" plans are in disarray over this news etc.etc.

May I suggest that he just uses Zoom like he usually does.  I can't see how this is going to make any difference whatsoever.

Maybe he's just looking for an excuse, as to not lose face for his hardcore brexiteers, who will believe anything anyway.

They are on the same level as Trump fans

Begs the question, how long any vaccine will stay effective

I think the need to self isolate is genuine but may well be used as an excuse for something.  Time will tell.
