Pattaya: 228 baht for a "kapao kai"! Shop asks for understanding - my customers are foreigners!

Thai social media was abuzz after a man called Padiphat Meebunmark went on Facebook to complain that he was charged 228 baht for a plate of "kapao kai with egg on top".

Irate netizens called for an investigation. Such a dish, chicken fried with basil, when bought at a roadside stall would probably cost about 60 baht, perhaps 5 baht more for the egg, notes Thaivisa.

Padiphat had been peckish on his way home and stopped for a takeaway.

However, when the authorities went to investigate they discovered this was no street hawker.

It was "Mister 99 Seafood" a large restaurant on beach road in central Pattaya - a place that caters mostly to tourists.

The item on the menu was clearly labelled - 199 baht plus 29 for the fried egg.

Manager Chaichana Amnuaypornphaisan explained that this was not a cheap stall but a place mostly for foreigners.

The customer was within his rights to make a complaint but Chaichana said they had done nothing wrong and asked for understanding from the public.

Of course not, it's every Thai's right to rip of foreigners! :jap:

This. How much clearer can this get?

You can't expect the price in a higher end restaurant to be the same as a road side stall. The price was clearly marked.

  • Popular Post

At least he charged a Thai the same price.

The only thing wrong was his explanation. What he should have said is "I have massive overheads to run a business in this location so my prices are higher than that of a dirty roadside stall".

I guess he thought mentioning ripping off foreigners would evoke some camaraderie in his fellow Thai.

The seller should be charges with fraud and scam for his action. He needs to be aware of the consequences.  This customer pays this price once and will never return. He is worse of.

But the government is doing the same with the dual price system for national parks. So the message is take as much as you can from the tourist. Disgusting attitude.

Welcome to Farang land, Mr. Pradiphat. My advice - stay in your Thai bubble.

The place is rammed with Thais at the weekend. It is on a prime beach front location and specialises in seafood dishes. The complainer should join the Pattaya Cheap Charlies Club.

Agree. Also the owner has to pay rent on a building in a prime location, which 65 baht carts do not have to do. Fair price

Please, do tell what fraud was perpetrated here.

agree with that statement maybe it is fairly priced, it's his attitude that is wrong, my customers are mostly foreigners so they deserve a high price please forgive me.

Some people are too stupid to clarify the price before. Can be at restaurants, taxis, clinics and whatever. They should complain about their stupidity afterwards and not about being ripped off.

Thai rak Thai.   His business should be noted in TripAdvisor and avoided.

It is ingrained in some people .    Outside of Thailand, I cannot remember two tier pricing for over a decade at least.  Not so amazing Thailand.

PRICE :  Nothing wrong here , his prime location is expensive , he must pay staff ,

utilities , Life seafood tanks , etc. etc.  NO reason to complain ....

ATTITUDE : WRONG  !!   Foreigners are NOT to be fleeced , this way of thinking

is very very very LOW CLASS  &  IGNORANT ......

Next door ( left side ) is a Bar / Food shop with reasonable price ... try it .

again : location = Beach Rd. front facing the beach , between Soi 7 & Patt.Klang Rd.

plus : Witherspoon on the Beach has a special menu - I think . next to Basaya.

on P.Klang Rd.:  Jasmin's has Thai & Western food selection -- medium range ,

fast WiFi , front of Krung Thai Bank , 1/2 block from the beach front .

Not a smart move by the owner in this day and age of social media.

Up tomorrow - MCd raided for selling burgers 5 times the price of 7/11 !

Typical Thai response to fewer customers is to put up the price to compensate, which in turn means fewer customers so let’s put the price up again until they price themselves out of business.

Everywhere else they reduce the price to entice more customers...

This silliness is brought up every time we hear of overcharging.... it would seem the opposite is happening around Pattaya where beer prices are dropping to entice custom.

You just did.
No mention of “farang price”.

Foreign tourists. And Thais pay the same price there. No dual pricing.

Foreigners require bigger serves, better cutlery and rent on beach road Pattaya isn’t cheap.

Disgusting comment, there is no dual pricing and the price is in the menu. So there is no fraud or scam, just a racist comment.

That guy looks like he's had too many khao pad gai dishes

I’m the first one to call a place out for overcharging foreigners but in this case prices were clearly posted and it was a “proper” restaurant. Personally I’d never pay 228 baht for that dish in any location. It’s a Thai staple and best found in local restaurants or street stalls.

The guy should have checked prices, or perhaps he just thought the price was for foreigners, in which case I’m glad he overpaid. As for the restaurant owner, better say nothing than put your foot in it!
