Private sector says Thai government not strict enough on illegal border crossings

 

 

Suphan Mongkhonsutee, the president of The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), said the issue of illegal immigrants in Thailand is the result of careless government measures which do not prevent illegal border-crossings. Suphan asked the government to stop trafficking gangs in which, he believes, some Thai officials are involved.

 

The FTI is asking the government to investigate very quickly, to find illegal workers, most of whom work in fresh markets. Suphan said the current spread of the virus is causing losses of over a billion baht in trade daily.

 

The FTI stated that there are no illegal immigrant workers in the over 6,000 factories in Samut Sakhon. All factory employees are legally registered and hiring legal migrant workers is actually beneficial, they say.

Illegal border crossings happen more or less only because legal order crossings are too difficult for Myanmar's poor workers who only want to do what everybody wants: Work to earn a living and to feed their families!

 

Thailand should ease legal borders crossings, not only to the benefit of the foreign workers, but also to increase the safety of the Thais. But, such an approach would be way too un-Thai, and it also would take away proven money-making opportunities from some powerful Mafia-like figures of the army and the border police. 

 

Therefore nothing will ever change in the land of smiles, except that the hassles for legal order crossing will become more, and the associated xenophobia towards foreigners will be grown by the toxic propaganda of the establishment, and their false narratives about dirty foreigners.

There is your answer, it isn't going to stop, Thai officials are involved, i.e. making easy money.

Sounds kinda funny coming from an industry that employs all the migrants.

If illegals could not get work they wouldn't have a reason to come.

So where did this outbreak emanate from, because to gain entry into the country legally since March/April they would have to be employed after going through quarantine and multiple testing??

How the FTI can possibly make a statement such as this is beyond comprehension.

When all is said and done, it is their Members and Associated that have made this issue.

Nobody else.

Absolutely. The people should be angry, and be demanding this of the authorities. As I said yesterday, the more I think about it, the angrier I get. The Thai army is getting hundreds of billions of baht a year from the people. The very least the people can expect in return, is protection of some sort. With hundreds of thousands of soldiers, what on earth are these guys doing with their time, if not patrolling the borders, the rivers, and the seas, during a pandemic the neighbors are dealing with? The soldiers, customs and immigration officials should be out there with tens of thousands of ATV's, patrolling the mountain areas around the borders, where people are sneaking in. Fishing boats should be randomly stopped, and checked. Borders should be locked down. Something seems very fishy here.

 

Are we looking at gross incompetence? Are we looking at total indifference? Corruption? Laziness? Total derelicton of duty, on the part of Prayuth, Anutin, and the entire leadership?

 

Prayuth once again says responsibility needs to be shared. So, I ask. When was the last time he took responsibility for anything? Has he apologized? Has he admitted this happened on his watch, and it very possibly could have been prevented? 

 

If not, Prayuth should offer to resign immediately, and the people, and especially the youth, should demand that. It is their right to demand a competent leader, during an emergency, especially.

Many People forget that a very large percentage of these Immigrant Workers have been here for a Year already ( or possibly more ) 

Only a Month or so ago, the Government was urging them to renew their Visa ( for up to 2 Years ) because Business,s were crying about the lack of Labour.

This sums it up.  A problem that's well known, but not talked about in the media.  For obvious reasons.
