BANGKOK, Dec 22 (TNA) – Health authorities are applying the Singapore Model to control the novel coronavirus disease among Myanmar workers and the early detection of many infected workers shows a positive sign.

Dr Wichan Pawan, director of the Institute for Urban Disease Control and Prevention, said the increasing number of new COVID-19 cases among Myanmar workers resulted from proactive tests which reflected efficient control efforts and people should not panic.

He said that the Singapore Model would be applied to curb COVID-19 among Myanmar workers in Samut Sakhon province.

Many Migrant worker camps and dormitories here in Bangkok as well as the rest of Thailand.  Seems they are being a little short sighted if they are only thinking about Samut Sakhon.  They need to start testing openly in all of Thailand and free.  However, where do you put a positive asymptomatic migrant worker who has no money to pay for the medical care above what the 30 baht scheme they can use will actually pay.

If they have work permit, they have social security. Social security will pay for the treatment.

I doubt illegal Burmese immigrants have work permit and social security

As someone else said illegal immigrants will not come to hospital to face arrest. Ther lies the problem, they need an amnesty to get people treated and control the virus

An amnesty would get in the way of extorting cash from the illegal migrants, or their employers.

Singapore model eh?

Does that mean that the fishing industry, both afloat and ashore, will abandon slavery and start to pay their migrant workers a proper wage?

Please tell us more about the Singapore fishing industry so that we can answer you.

Illegals will not come to hospital to get treatment for the fear of being arrested.

And so it will continue.. as will the companies turning a blind eye to offer employment.

If there was no employment available they wouldn't come... easy as that!

Singapore discovered months ago that migrant labor camps were hotbeds of transmission, and yet the "proactive" and "efficient" efforts here in Thailand that he's speaking of appear to have started only this week. Hint: if you take actions after something happens, those actions are by definition reactive, not proactive.
