A trainee at an airline that operates flights out of Don Mueang Airport has tested positive for Covid-19, Flying Officer Sumpun Kutranon, general manager of the airport, said on Monday.

He said the trainee had lost his sense of smell on December 23 and tested for Covid-19 at a hospital the following day.

“The trainee is being treated in hospital because the test came in positive on Christmas Day,” he said.

He said the airport authorities have checked all CCTV footage and found the trainee had worn a mask at all times.

“However, those who came into contact with the trainee have been instructed to go into self-quarantine and wait for results. Those who are at low risk of infection were instructed to monitor their symptoms and strictly observe measures put in place by the Public Health Ministry,” he said.

Sumpun said the airport has implemented the following measures to curb the spread of the virus:

• The airport’s medical division has been instructed to cooperate with the Department of Disease Control on containing the spread of virus.

• The airport will call those who came into contact with the patient and have them tested in hospital.

• All areas inside passenger terminal will be disinfected every hour.

• Passengers’ temperature will be checked at all entrances. Anybody with body temperature above 37.3 degrees Celsius will not be allowed to enter.

• Seating in terminal area has been marked out to ensure social distancing.

• Staff will either be made to work from home or on a shift basis to reduce congestion.

• Staff must wear a face mask at all times.

"The airport and Public Health Ministry are monitoring the situation closely,” he said.

The airport can be contacted via the 1722 hotline or by calling its PR centre at (02) 535 1192.

We are going to be completely transparent about this, but not tell you the name of the airline.

'staff must wear a mask at all times'

And away from the airport?

There will be a lot more contact tracing required outside the airport to control community infection. The longer full contact tracing beyond the airport is delayed, the more possibility of greater community spread.

Don Mueang that's all you need to know.

It doesn't matter. Anyone in contract with the trainee has/will be contacted.

So where was his track and trace lists.  Where had he been, if only here in Thailand which provinces, and if just here in Bangkok, where may he have been infected.  Story leaves holes that need to be filled with information by the government instead of being cryptic on what they give out.

why do you need to know the name of the employer airline?

That knowledge would have very little to do with community, I woud be fairly certain if they had been in a cockpit of a plane, the aircraft would be thoroughly cleaned.

Knowing the name of airline will not protect you, only certain measures which are reliant on your adherence will asist in protecting you from infection.

If you look at contact tracing in places like Korea that have very rigorous and effective policies in place, they publish as much information as possible about where the infected person went and when (often to the minute, wherever possible), without hiding or concealing the names of businesses or places visited, in order that other people can see whether they might have been in contact with the person in question and can get tested.

By contrast, many of the timelines I've seen here will say that a person worked for "an airline at Don Muang" or visited "a restaurant on Sukhumvit" or "a store in Pathum Thani" or "a market in Nakhon Pathom". I'm sure that all of those unnamed businesses prefer it that way, but it isn't especially helpful as actionable information for people who may have crossed paths with the infected person.
