What Would (seriously) Make You Leave Thailand ?

Featured Replies

We are leaving soon, but even if we weren't the only thing that would compell me to leave would be something that is not discusable on these boards :o

a messy love triangle involving a bar girl ?

No way - there are at least 3,753 threads dealing with this plus Chownah's advice column.

But back to leisurely's post I am wondering if she is refering to the death of a prominent and much revered person?

That & the subsequent happenings would have been my guess too.

it was the thoughts of the subsequent events that I have been thinking about for a couple of years now.

CB, I live in the heart of a Muslim village on my island. Most of my neighbors are Muslim. And d@mn good people, too, I might add.

They have turned away radicalists from the South before, preferring to live peacefully with their Buddhist neighbors. As the community is quite old there has been extensive intermarrying. So, go to a local Buddhists funeral at the Wat and you will find most of the local Muslims there too. Same with a Muslim funeral. My husband's uncle married a local Muslim woman. So did a cousin. I do not worry about Muslims where I live, and frankly, many of them are better neighbors than the Buddhists.

As for the event that cannot be discussed, well, we won't discuss it here. But lets just say, I am not so convinced of disaster as some. Think of the great Shakespearean play Henry V. I am an optimist and always hope for the best.

And I would never leave my husband behind. I firmly believe in my vows, as does he.

Not only do I not expect disaster to befall the nation when this event comes to pass, I expect after an initial period of malaise and political posturing that generally thing will get a lot better for Thais.

Yes, but we aren't really discussing it? Are we? Lets trod carefully on this one, and try to get back on the topic please :o

One thing that would make us both leave would obviously be if global warming caused the polar caps to melt, the oceans to rise and we lost our beachfront property, finding it, well, underwater property instead :D

And those living far inland find that they now have beach front properties.

More immediate problems are arising even now although they are likely to be more of local concerns.

The first is continuing illegal looging and deforestation of the uplands creating a situation where flash flooding and mud slides are the annual norm. Already this is the case in some districts and unless the next government is more effective than all of the previous in stopping the destruction of the forests the situation will just get worse.

Second is the rising industrialisation of Thailand putting severe strain of already depleted water resources and affecting the farmers in the areas. Again look to the disputes already evident around the eastern seaboard where industry gets priority over farms and domestic supply.

Neither of these things in themselves will deter me from living eventually in Thailand but they may just make it unpleasant enough to tip the balance in favour of an alternative destination.

SBK the four paragraphs above have made me happy on what has been a very sad day for me.

I wish you and your family the very best for the future

For me it would be internet related. If they panic one day and introduce some sort of restriction whereby you just can't access the internet or they restrict it so much so as to be useless, I wouldnt have any choice but to leave. Other than this, so long as there is no civil war etc (and even that might be quite interesting for a while.. in a non sadistic sense) and the baht remains ok against the pound I cant think of anything else.

Oh, one thing, maybe being hunted by someone you offended. You know what I mean- said the wrong thing to the wrong person in the wrong place and now you never open the curtains for fear of little red dots appearing on your walls.

You know.
