BANGKOK (NNT) - In addition to campaigns to prevent road accidents during New Year celebrations, the government is campaigning for people to practice social distancing, aimed at limiting the spread of COVID-19. The government is urging people to stay home and refrain from holding or attending large parties.

The Deputy Prime Minister, Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan, in his capacity as chairman of the National Road Safety Committee, chaired the Road Safety Center meeting to integrate road safety measures under the "New Normal, Drive Safely, No Accident" campaign. This year, the government is focusing on road safety and preventive measures against COVID-19.

Gen. Prawit urged the public not to commit offences, particularly speeding and drink-driving. At the same time, officers have to ensure strict enforcement of traffic rules and regulations as well as measures to contain the spread of COVID-19. Members of the public also have to look after themselves. Public celebrations will not be allowed, but families may celebrate in small groups.

The Interior Minister, Gen. Anupong Paojinda, said today there will be community and family checkpoints, along with proactive measures to ensure people’s safety at tourist destinations and other venues during the "Seven Dangerous Days". More stringent measures will be taken from December 29th, 2020, to January 4th, 2021. The integration will be location-based, focusing on addressing risk factors associated with road accidents as well as commuters, vehicles, road conditions and the environment. They will comply with measures against COVID-19, and strict law enforcement will be imposed.
