Democrat Warnock wins in Georgia; second runoff and U.S. Senate control undecided

Ossoff declared victory.

The race hasn't actually been called yet but dollars to donuts he did indeed win.

I didn't think the democrats could pull this off.

Maybe one seat. Not two.

But it's happening.

In Georgia!

But face it, mr. trump and the republicans made so many unforced errors that you wouldn't normally expect.

Hopefully the dems will load up the court. I would like to see 15 justices.

I would like to see some of the US territories (Puerto Rico) given statehood.

The arguments against it would be fascinating to watch - how to disguise fear of: 1) losing an unrepresentative majority in the Senate, and 2)  how to pretend that they are not racial!

Sure, why not?

Also U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam and the Northern Marianas.

I guess San Miguel de Allende would be pushing it.

Not at all, include all of them. Heck, Greenland should get 2 senators since trump tried to buy them!

Yes why not. "The American Pacific Islands" state, I'm sure that someone can think up a more appropriate title. With modern communications the excuse that they are widely separated is largely irrelevant. Without statehood Puerto Rico and those territories are, basically, umh - colonies populated by brown people...

IMO it was Trump's call to Raffensperger that tipped the scale to the Democrats. Electorally, he's the gift that keeps on giving. The Democrats probably can't believe their luck.

There's going to be a bloodbath in the GOP in the coming months. Som nam na.

I must confess I thought it was represented in the Senate - surprised it is not; but then perhaps not, at times nothing surprises me anymore about American democracy...

Never has there been as disastrous a loser as 45.

Now The Senate can pass a Bill adding 5 seats to the Supreme Court, and President Biden can pick the judges. Sally Yates will be named Attorney General, and she has plenty of lawbreaking to investigate and prosecute from 45's clan. Obviously the self-pardon won't hold up in court, so 45 can face a myriad of Federal charges. He's already going to face charges in NY State and now Georgia, because of his call on Saturday.r

Everything is beginning to look good.

Really it is  looking to hold some hope for some  hope.

I think the biggest mistake was Mitch McConnell's. He should have acceded to the $2000 payments. I think that woke up enough Americans to what life would be like if the Republicans were in a position to stymie the recovery.

Have there been any tweets yet from Trump ordering Loeffler to contest the result in court, up to the Federal Supreme Court?

So far, I have not seen Loeffler concede.

Here's an interesting piece of data from fivethirtyeight.com

"One takeaway from the results tonight is that Republican fears seem to have materialized when it came to runoff turnout...

However, if we look at counties where 99 percent of the expected vote has been reported, it seems Republicans were right to be worried. As the chart below shows, the more heavily a county backed Trump in the November general election, the more its runoff turnout tended to drop relative the general."

IMO losing the senate would be the beat thing that could happen for the Republicans. They were caught in the trump merry go round,  and could not get off.

Losing the majority will allow them  the opportunity to do a reset and perhaps get back to Republicans ideals that were trashed during  trump's four years.

let's see what happens.

Cool story.  As if banana republicans didn't throw those mythical 'ideals' out the window long before bunker boy came along.

All true, but at least then there was a basic set of tenets that  at the very least pretended to adhere too, such as smaller government. open markets etc. Now they are simply a cult following with only the goal of being re-elected.

Banana republicans have not cared about debt and deficits for a long time.  That is just a convenient talking point they roll out every time democrats are in charge.  If you don't believe me just look at recent democrat president deficits vs banana republican. Bush Jr. doubled it (maybe more?). Obama cut it in half despite having to deal with the worst financial crisis since the great depression.  Clinton actually managed to balance the budget.  The only president in modern history to do that.

Trump promised to drain the swamp. Now the Republicans are bogged down in the new one he made.

Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch.

Let's see if they splinter, but it looks like if they did all the GOP senators who were present for last years' impeachment will have to be banished.  Fat chance of that.

I saw one GOP stalwart on a television panel on the subject of "the phone call" with Georgia and all he could say was it was just like the Dems did in 2000 and 2016, no different.  How's that for the GOP perspective of reality?

For the time being it's relatively peaceful. However, after results are officially announced, the suckers will get very angry.

Not exactly.

A coup attempt is in progress.

Encouraged by Mr. trump, hundreds of possibly armed coup supporters have illegally stormed the U.S. capital.

The congress has been ordered to shelter in place while they were in the middle of the constitutional process of finalizing the electoral vote counts.

Watching the livestreams on youtube at the moments near capitol and in one of them one of them asked a bloke if he could move out of the frame, because they were trying to film the revolution.

It's not going to be quiet for long.  I am certain some of them are armed as they have been broadcasting their intention to do this for a long time already. So there will be definitely be some level of violence to clear them out.
