How do farangs get covid vaccinations in Thailand ?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

When private hospitals are allowed to receive and provide vaccinations the foreigners have the freedom to visit the said hospitals and receive the vaccination and pay privately for it or check with their medical insurance if it will be covered.

Failing that if the desire for some non citizen/permanent resident is to have the vaccination free on a public health system then a return to ones home country might be need to be considered.

Time will tell, even in America only 4 million vaccinated ~1%.  If you have to wait that long in a first world country, will be an even longer wait in poorer countries.  As in USA and UK, they take care of citizens and those most at risk first.  Patience

Who cares?  If you pay enough it will work anyway: do you not understand this?

Vaccine efficacy 67%. You have a 1 in  3  chance of getting covid, if exposed.

Vaccine efficacy 95%. You have a 1 in 20 chance of getting covid, if exposed.

I will take number two.

It will be many months before the vaccine is available to the general public

No one knows what, if any, the policy will be regarding availability to non-Thai citizens once it is.

This is a matter of great concern to many of us in Thailand since it seems certain there can be no international travel without having had the vaccine.I do not think it is likely the Thai authorities will make any special arrangements for resident foreigners. My view is that foreigners will have to make their own arrangements at private hospitals and I concur that will not be possible for many months, as a pure guess - September time.

A great opportunity for Dr Donna and Medconsult.

I personally am fr more concerned about the transportation and handling of the vaccine prior to injection. Another concern is the vaccine itself.

I am more than willing to pay out of pocket for a valid vaccine - valid meaning a paperwork trail of batch, manufacturer, and date of manufacture. I'd also like to know about transportation and handling of the vaccine. From reports you need two shots about a month apart and cold shipping and storage.

To get a valid Covid-19 vaccination (two shots) in Thailand may well be a logistical nightmare when you consider the requirements of shipping temperature, storage temperature, and the timing required of multiple inoculations. Add in a solid reputable medical facility with the paperwork trail of the vaccines manufacturing data.

Haven't you heard, the US is now some kind of Banana Republic and you can't look there for any kind of example of anything much.

Here is an idea, why don't the various Embassies arrange something for their own expat citizens, like the UK Embassy?

hahaha, I crack myself up sometimes. ????????????  Like that's ever going to happen with those muppets.

Well I received an e-mail from the US Embassy and it seems they will not be assisting their citizens here.  This is a small bit from the Embassy health alert e-mail:

COVID-19 Vaccinations

As part of our efforts to give U.S. citizens timely information so that they can make informed choices about travel abroad, the Department advises that the United States government does not plan to provide COVID-19 vaccinations to private U.S. citizens overseas.  U.S. citizens traveling or residing overseas should follow host country developments and guidelines for COVID-19 vaccination.

For under 200 baht a day, I would rather take my chances with a reputable insurance provider for peace of mind and choice of hospital, doctors and specialists.

I have insurance close to 200b/day, but they did not offer me free vax, even reduced price.

Your insurance is an exemption. But because thai government are going to offer free vax to foreigners, you don't qualify.

The matter is, that thai vax will be available rather at the end of year, when they do expect some 50% of population covered. But it might also be sometimes the next year, as they would rather cover their own population.

Taking now same insurance, as you have, might need premium, to cover for pandemic, so it might be over 200b. Probably now worth, if basic covid insurance is some 1k baht and vax would be max 10k

No surprise there and the UK Embassy will do the same.  Of course, their own staff will be vaccinated without any delay.  Such is government and the way it works, for itself,  not its citizens.

I am wondering too what we will get and when! I hope not the experimental things from Russia or China! The following quote shows, what the Swiss embassy wrote to swiss expats in an email yesterday. I guess expats from other countries will be handled in a similar way:

"

3.   Vaccine

Many of you have been contacting us regarding vaccine possibilities in Thailand. Unfortunately, it is still too early for concise answers. Here is what I know:

Swiss nationals in Thailand are part of the country's resident population. It will therefore be primarily the task of the Thai authorities to procure vaccines for the foreign population residing here. My team is in daily contact with the relevant Thai authorities and hospitals to obtain the latest update. I am also personally in direct contact with Health Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Anutin on this issue, who personally assured me that Thailand has an interest in vaccinating the foreign resident population in unison with its own nationals.

Thailand has been purchasing vaccines from Sinovac (China) and AstraZeneca (UK-Sweden). The first delivery will arrive in February and May respectively. But according to our information, no vaccine has been approved by the Thai Food & Drug Administration (FDA) yet. It is thus not clear when the vaccinations will start in Thailand. (See also our Facebook page for more information).

We are happy to inform you that if the full expenses of vaccinations are not covered by your country of residence, we at PassportCard Cyprus will bear the costs. Coverage is subject to the terms and conditions of your policy and the customary rates in your country of residence.

Given the difference in efficacy I would rather pay for my choice

I have already had covid so no hurry to vaccine

thai should look after there own but if they have a community of expats and foreign workers they will have to vaccinate all.

If you leave its hard to get back

It seems that farangs can get caught in a grey zone about covid vaccinations.

What thai official tells, it looks they only care of thai citizens.

Many of our born countries also seems not to care about people who are living outside the country.

Well I think/see some private thai hospitals will offer vaccinations to very overcharged prices, there was already an example in Bangkok with a private hospital who offered vaccination for around 10000 baht without having the vaccine, this is not the right way to get the vaccination, to make some greedy thai speculants happy, I think. A Pfizer or Moderna vaccine from USA/Europe cost around 1000 baht, the oxford vaccine cost around 100 baht.

I have still not seen or heard about any serious vaccine offers with quality western vaccine to farangs in Thailand, which will be avaiable this or the next year ?

What to do ?

Not just 'farangs' as you call them, but foreigners in general. Not just white people. When the vaccine becomes available it will, I'm sure, be on sale as are a myriad of other treatments and procedures. Flu and pneumonacosis being examples..you should have these two already

Hollywood is to blame for the misconception a LOT of people seem to have about how 'hands on' embassies actually are with the needs/wants of their citizens overseas.

Correct. As anybody who has tried to get help from the British Embassy soon finds out.

It is neither. Its a relatively healthy democracy. As a nation it is barely 200 years old. It is an infant. Give it time. It will enter the ranks of civilized nations after penal reform, the jettisoning of the cynical war on drugs,  health care for all, and the creation of a real education system. The next 4 years will be interesting.

I think that Thailand should emulate the UK and now America in getting first shots to the whole population to cut down on the number of cases needing hospitalization.  If the hospitals become overcrowded, people will die.  It is said that now in Los Angeles ambulance companies are being ordered not to bring people who have a poor prognosis for survival to hospitals.  This triage may be practiced country-wide as the number of cases increases exponentially.  Overcrowding of the hospitals could happen in Thailand.  People have a lot of bravado about COVID only being a minor illness.  That is magical thinking.  People don’t know how sick they will become until they are infected.  Even people who don’t get serious symptoms are said to have lingering effects.

For me, the choice is clear.  When any of the Western vaccines is available here, I will pay whatever it costs to get my first injection.

You are still in those old days where all research came from the West. Today China has acquired a master's degree in all sciences and specifically medical research. As index of competence, despite a much lower GDP per capita, life expectancy is approaching ours.

Consequently, I will ask to take advantage of the Chinese vaccine as soon as it is offered, without the slightest hesitation.

You are probably correct. The Chinese authorities stole all our research on every subject from nuclear weapons to medicine. They know what we know plus they have the added advantage of having a compliant, subjugated population who are expendable and thus ideal for mass experimentation.
