Immigration warns of serious implications for Thais crossing borders illegally

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Immigration Bureau has announced it will prosecute, to the fullest extent, Thai nationals making illegal crossings to and from Myanmar, while tightening border protection.

The Immigration Bureau Commissioner Pol Lt Gen Sompong Chingduong has announced the police will pursue charges against persons involved with the trafficking of migrant workers into the country, with the possibility of asset seizures, by virtue of the money laundering law, from those found involved in human trafficking.

He has warned that while Thai nationals, who illegally cross the border to work in casinos in neighboring countries, are welcomed to return and receive treatment in case they contract COVID-19, they will also be subject to prosecutions according to the Immigration Act.

The Immigration Bureau is now working with provincial offices and related agencies to tighten land border controls. They are expecting an increase in illegal land crossings from 15 January to 13 February as the government will be allowing informal workers to enroll in a COVID-19 screening program.

With this program, Thai nationals working in neighboring countries will be allowed to apply to return. They will be screened for COVID-19, with those testing positive being admitted for treatment, while other returnees must serve their 14-day quarantine.

Have I remembered this correctly regarding the first Thais with covid who crossed back to Thailand illegally:

Didn't our glorious leader put the prosecution of them on hold?

usually they go directly from vague regulation with lax enforcement to draconian laws with life sentence penalties.

Surely an amnesty would produce far better results?

doubtful, since their goal is to avoid quarantine

Not all of them. There will be some that crossed and now want to return and may be prepared to accept quarantine but are scared of prosecution.  If they've lost their income because of the Covid situation they will be forced to return. Surely its better that they return legally than risk them crossing illegally with the potential of passing the virus on?

In some areas crossing the border without paperwork is (was) quite normal and widely known about by the authorities - although they would probably deny it now.  In my ex-wife's village it was an almost daily occurence.

Maybe if they stopped ridiculously using 100 soldiers and police to monitor 5 girls with their fingers in the air they could do what they are paid to do !

While those who assist at the highest levels remain immune from prosecution.

Only the illegals & drivers are caught... amazing Thailand.

Excuse me a minute Sir,

Your people are up to their necks in "allowing" folks to cross the border

or is this article just to placate your superiors.

I wonder if this includes wealthy hit and run drivers , on the run?
