Army prepares 100,000 field hospital beds should COVID-19 situation escalate

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Royal Thai Army now has some 100,000 beds available for field hospitals to help support the government should the pandemic situation further escalate.

The Royal Thai Army Commander in Chief, Gen Narongphan Jitkaewthae said in a meeting today that the army has been the first agency to provide support to the government in the fight against COVID-19, even without receiving a request to do so.

He said the Royal Thai Army currently has 100,000 beds available for field hospitals should the situation become more severe, while the 1st Communication Battalion and the army’s engineering department have assisted in the setting up of field hospitals, school cleaning, as well as other assistance operations at 272 locations across the country.

Gen Narongphan said soldiers have been giving blood to alleviate the blood shortage during the pandemic, tightening border security to prevent illegal entry, and helped with the administration of Samut Sakhon, which has been declared a highest control zone.

He said the 100,000 beds would come from soldiers’ dorms, as soldiers can simply sleep on the floor.

Did he donate his bed as well? He is also a soldier, thus can sleep on the floor

But.... but.... it’s under control and contained to migrant workers.

Do they know something we dont?

'Advanced Planning', who knew that was a thing here?

Hopefully these won't be needed.

It is a very complex and expensive business setting up 'Field hospitals' or 'Field ambulances' and I am quite surprised that the Thai Armed Forces have as many as 100,000 beds.

I would have estimated about 10,000 absolute max.

Perhaps they have designated public buildings, barracks, schools, gymnasia etc as areas for emergency accommodation but a roof over one's head is not necessarily a 'Field Hospital'.

just the government propaganda exercise.

it means nothing, if army is just ready to give beds.

hospital bed means something more - a secure space, possible medical equipment and allocated personel. At minimum it should have oxygen supply system.

if soldiers can sleep rough on the floor, also can do patients.

on the picture are not soldiers, but former soldiers from a paramilitary organisation (they might be wearing military uniforms, but have blue hats and yellow scarfs)

A field hospital is more than a bed.  Where will the medical staff come from to staff these hospitals?

Thai hospitals depend on family to come and care for patient. With Covid19, there can be no family visit or care.

Does Thailand have oxygen and ventilator equipment? I remember when Los Angeles had run out of oxygen for patients. Sounds more like warehousing of people.

So a stint on them beds in an open field building for 2 weeks NO VACCINE,NO MEDS and we are good to go , sorry but I'm not lending into the fear  !!

These beds will never, I repeat never be used. Thailand will never have 100'000 publicly acknowledged cases.  More chance of Prayut resigning gracefully.

True, but its a good story to keep up the level of fear with the local population. A population without fear tends to get a little boisterous about having their livelihoods destroyed. Those in fear will accept anything.

Yes, how little they are testing.

How many migrant workers are there spread out across the country?

there use to be some 4.5mln workers from asia and some 450k farangs.

now, since economy halted in the spring, might be only half of that.

people left for holidays and are not able to come back.

but those beds are not for migrant workforce, very much for thai.

probably regulations forbid any foreigners at military base.

When I want to visit beach south of pattaya, soldiers at the gate allow me only with my wife, not alone, and after taking her and my details.

Maybe worried by the new spike in cases found in western Bangkok. If that spreads through the Big Mango then they'll probably need a lot more than 100,000 beds. Pray to Buddha that it doesn't happen, anyway.

Every news saying the nr's are dropping every day but they are preparing 100.000 beds ??

All the beds in the OP look brand new and un-slept in to me.......Still, nothing better than a little guilt tripping; "We give up bed for you.", to keep the populace forever grateful.

Why an exact 100,000? Seems they’ve rounded it up or down..

Is this for that quarantine-free entry to Thailand through Phuket?
