It seems like an unlikely combination. A Thai som tam (papaya salad) lady and an international gang of Africans.

But Thailand's consumer protection police are prosecuting the lady for defrauding the public and spreading misleading information through a website.

Thanik Khlairak was picked up at her home in Minburi, northern Bangkok yesterday morning and soon found herself being interviewed by Pol Maj-Gen Natthasak Chaowanakhasai of the CCPD.

Nattasak said that a company called "Siam Export" was opened in 2017 selling rubber gloves and medical equipment via a website.

Last May an Italian company contacted the firm then transferred $318,000 US or around 10 million baht for rubber gloves that were to be sent to Poland.

When the company went to the delivery place they found it did not exist and then the company could not be contacted again.

They requested the Italian embassy to contact the Thai police for assistance.

Thanik said she knows some Africans but they only asked her to open a bank account and manage withdrawals.

She didn't know anything about rubber gloves, she claimed.

And the odd deposit?

The Bank just assumed she landed a big time Italian sponsor.
