BANGKOK (NNT) - On the occasion of International Women’s Day, which is celebrated on March 8 every year, Prime Minister and Defense Minister, Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, has commended women as a driving force in the country, and says the problem of inequality will be quickly addressed.

Gen. Prayut praised the role of women, as they propel the country forward in all respects. He compared a woman to the legs of an elephant, saying both women and men step forward with the front legs. However, women are also the hind legs, as they contribute income to the family, take care of the children and the elderly, and do household chores. They play an important role, which requires great commitment, and they should receive more recognition from society. There must be regulations and guidelines to encourage women to use their full potential to enhance the quality of their family life and work.

The role of Thai women is increasingly discussed globally, with more women working as high-level officials in both public and private organizations. There are more women working as village volunteers and social development and human security volunteers. They work with organizations to promote the civil rights of women and children. They help the government in ensuring public safety and mitigating the adverse effects of COVID-19. In the southern border provinces of Thailand, there are some 640 women serving as rangers with the Royal Thai Army and the Royal Thai Navy. They provide assistance to women and children, set up checkpoints and promote public participation in their areas.

However, there are people in society believing that women are inferior to men. The government is attentive to this issue and has established a strategy to promote women’s development and integration between relevant agencies. Thus, all Thai people will have a correct understanding of the equality of men and women, and will know that the genders are equal. Thai society will then become an ethical and just society, without discrimination. Women will be encouraged to take on more roles in politics and contribute to policy making. The potential and quality of life of women in all groups and of all ages, particularly those in need, will receive further support, bringing freedom and stability to their lives. They will be able to work to their full potential, with every day being women’s day.
