Thailand reports 1,767 new COVID-19 cases, 2 more deaths

A government spokesman told a news briefing Sunday that authorities are beginning to see more cases with serious symptoms, and seeing the new cases spread to more different kinds of settings such as government workplaces, private offices, educational facilities and elsewhere.

The spokesman attributed the rise in cases, at least in part, to not enough members of the public consistently practicing safety measures such as social distancing, mask wearing and hand cleaning. Those measures "have been practiced less than expected," the spokesman said.

I think the spokesman should also reinforce that this is a new variant, far more contagious and they've been caught with their pants down. Measures that worked in the past now have to be doubled in effort to have any chance at all of containing this.

With today's newly reported cases, Thailand moved up another two positions to be ranked now 109th among the world's countries in terms of cumulative numbers of COVID cases. The MoPH charts below are ranked by total numbers of COVID cases.

And regional comparisons between Thailand and its regional peer countries.

Strange how none of them thought of "not traveling" as an option.

Probably have a job not a pension!

With regard to fatalities, I have seen no information on the last 4 who died. No nationality or age or underlying conditions given - or maybe I missed them during this 'death-by-graphics' stage.

Seem to have stopped reporting this.

The two yesterday were middle aged Thais with substantial pre-existing conditions. Both of today's newly reported deaths also seem to involve substantial preexisting conditions.

The Nation has the following details of today's two newly reported deaths:

"The 100th death was a senior monk in Bangkok, 54, who had chronic kidney disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. He passed out on April 12 with fatigue symptoms and was taken to hospital where the medical team could not revive him. Tests later showed he was a Covid-19 patient.

Another death reported on Sunday was a woman in Bangkok, 70, with SLD, rheumatoid arthritis and chronic kidney disease. She had high fever and difficulty in breathing on April 5. The patient was taken to hospital on April 12 and diagnosed with pneumonia and Covid-19. She passed away on April 17."

Yesterdays deaths were a man in Tak, aged 38 who had obesity, and the second death was a 51 year old man from Pathum Thani who had existing conditions — heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure

April ripple...... not my phrase.

Perhaps you should resist the temptation to exaggerate the situation.

New normal returning soon (that is MY phrase)

April ripples bring May surges?

After all, It is a pandemic.

3 days of almost identical figures followed by one day of a higher figure is not continued exponential growth according to my understanding of the term.

If it continues to rise in the days ahead then you might have a point.

Yeah need understand also that if they not test more is hard to get higher number!

Anybody know where to find the latest updates for all provinces!

The government's briefing today also addressed a somewhat fuzzy situation about the nation's availability of current hospital beds to handle the growing numbers of COVID cases.

Social media comment has been growing about COVID positive patients reporting having difficulties finding hospitals willing to accept them. A government spokesman Sunday said "the government is well aware" of those concerns and is trying to address them with directions to various agencies to prepare up to 25,000 extra beds nationwide in various kinds of facilities.

"There is a pending concern over the number of rooms in hospitals, the shortage of hospital beds, as you may have read in the news," the government spokesman said. "The government is well aware of this concern over the hospital bed shortage... As I mentioned, it's an ongoing task of management."

At the time time, the government spokesman cited a report by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration saying it had more than 9,000 beds hospital capacity, but at present had only 4,900+ of those occupied.

Thailand travel and news blogger Richard Barrow, meanwhile, reported Sunday that the numbers of COVID patients in serious condition had climbed to 128, while the number on ventilators had climbed to 28 -- both numbers about double those last reported by the government two days ago.

I could not find those details in any of the briefing materials the MoPH made public Sunday. But Barrow posted the following info to his Facebook page:

You know full well that unless they are ordered not to do something, most will do just as they want. Total lack of leadership has caused the current increasing numbers.

These pre-existing conditions are giving us a false narrative. Most listed pre-existing conditions are not life-threatening. People can live a full lifespan with diabetes if it's checked. Same for high blood pressure. Both can be kept in order with medicines. Obesities. C'mon. Half the country is obese. There's a lot we already know about this virus. Except for one thing. Why does it kill a relatively healthy young person in just 2 days, and on the other hand, relatively sick and unhealthy people don't even recognize they caught the virus.

I can see them running out of beds rapidly and people will then have to be directed to self-quarantine, adding further problems as they will fail to do so effectively.

I expect the hotel association will continue to push aggressively for a no quarantine opening in July.

People cause the problems..........................

The two figures generally move together because under the government's policy, anyone who tests positive for COVID is required to enter some kind of hospital or similar facility.

I wonder how long they'll be able to maintain this policy for?Until they run out of room I  suppose.

Definitely......with TAT predicting millions of visitors by August......

Same lack of leadership whereby some people encouraged their family members to travel from Bangkok for Songkran.

When fools rush in.....that's assured with this Government, can not delay the re-opening of tourism.  Others will state that there is nothing so serious here unlike other countries, so why not open up and let them come.  Well common sense would dictate something else than opening up, but then when has this Government ever used common sense.  Had they, well then Songkran travel would have been stopped.

It is why they are making Hospitels now by using ASQ Hotels.  They will fill them all up along with all of the other closed hotels that the THA is pushing for them to use, before they would allow anyone to self isolate I am afraid.

Could someone please explain the (practical) difference between "local transmissions" and "people entering quarantine"?

Local being person to person, at work, home whatever.

From quarantine being people who have entefed Thailand from wherever and have been quarantined and tested there..
