BANGKOK (NNT) - Since the outbreak of "COVID-19" in the southern border provinces, more than 500 cases have been found. This includes cases stemming from the entertainment venue cluster in Songkhla, and the group of inmates in prison in Narathiwat. Meanwhile, the number of COVID-19 cases in Malaysia has increased daily. In Bangkok, Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has closely followed the situation and has assured Thais that he will take care of the COVID-19 situation in the southern border provinces. There are now almost 2,000 beds to accommodate patients.

Ms Ratchada Thanadirek, Government Deputy Spokesperson, said Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha is overseeing management and control of the COVID-19 pandemic in the southern border provinces. She asked people to be confident that the government is ready to take whatever action is required to quell the COVID-19 outbreak for the safety of all citizens and officials. The government has ordered officials to facilitate Thai people who are returning from Malaysia and conduct disease screenings according to public health measures.

The Southern Border Province Administrative Center (SBPAC) is cooperating with the Ministry of Public Health and relevant agencies to provide 1,933 beds in hospitals, field hospitals and Hospitels in Narathiwat, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Satun and is encouraging the public to correctly follow the instructions of the Sheikhul Islam Office and the Provincial Communicable Disease Control Committee especially during the Ramadan fasting period. In the early stages, all five provinces will receive 10,000 doses of vaccine each, for the protection of medical personnel and other risk groups.

At the Thai-Malaysian border, Thai people are currently allowed to return to their country through only four permanent checkpoints: Su-ngai Kolok checkpoint in Narathiwat, Betong checkpoint in Yala, Sadao checkpoint in Songkhla and Wang Prachan checkpoint in Satun three days a week - Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Each checkpoint is allowed to accommodate no more than 125 returnees per day. This does not affect border trade because products are still imported and exported normally especially consumer goods and strict "COVID-19" prevention measures are implemented.
