Thailand’s medical system facing its biggest test as virus surges back

With COVID-19 cases now rising by more than 1,000 per day, many Thais are wondering whether the country’s healthcare sector will crumble under the pressure.

 

Despite the launch of field hospitals and “hospitels” (hotels turned into hospitals) concern is rising that the limited medical workforce may soon be overburdened.

 

Those fears intensified this week after the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) announced that 146 medics had come down with the disease. Thirty-three of the medics were infected at work, which also forced members of their team to quarantine.

Surely they mean covid incubation centers .

And this is the problem.  Hospitals can only deal with COVID, nothing or little else.  

Look at India - they have no oxygen.  Of course that's a significantly poor third world country with a notoriously poor standard of life, where the poor simply never go to a doctor in their lives.  Kids get sick?  Oh well, have more kids.  No doctor, no treatments.  

So what ends up in a place like Thailand is surgeries get delayed, people suffer, and it ends up being a big big problem.  We are currently dealing with a huge backlog in surgeries with people genuinely suffering day after day here and it's really sad.  

I do hope that they can fare well - they have great doctors in Thailand!

Keep tossing asymptomatic cases into hospitals instead of allowing them to quarantine at home.  I'm sure it will get better and better for the hospitals. ????

And the blame lays squarely on the government for allow unrestricted travel.  Of course, it will be blamed on someone else, probably foreigners.

Not just Doctors, Nurses too and generally all other support staff despite the funding shortcomings in Government hospitals

Thailand must try to expedite vaccination programme for entire population vaccinating the most vulnerable  first and stop the crazy sandbox plans for Phuket. Invest money in vaccines and forget about tourism until Covid under control

The blame lays squarely on every government.

UK borrowing as a result of the pandemic is 6 times the pre pandemic level and now close to around 100% of GDP.

Thailand and other emerging economies do not have the luxury of that level of borrowing, time people faced reality. It is what it is and everyone has a choice.

How can the Government forget about tourism, when half of the politicians are involved in kickbacks etc. Generals all over the world have shown they are not capable of running a country the only reason they take control is for self gain not for the betterment of the people or the country. Time to turn up the propaganda and looking for scapegoats. Maybe its all down to Myanmar they will be a great scapegoat only problem is Generals blaming Generals. It will be a long time before Thailand overcomes this Covid problem so they can forget about all the dreams of tourists wealthy or not coming to a country out of control. Time for tough decisions popularity or not the Generals need to lift their game before the people do!

The problem is the many , many Thais will not quarantine at home. For example have you had a procedure here and in the States? Like a colonoscopy? In the States you clean yourself out at home and come to the hospital ready to go. Here, you do the cleansing process under the watchful eyes of the hospital staff at the hospital. They do not trust the general Thai population ( from past experience I was told) to do it. So how can they expect to change when it comes to quarntining?

Funny everything suddenly goes sideways when they actually start testing people. But all these beds they are saying getting taken are no doubt being filled with 99% asymptomatic cases I would wager. 
Had a year to get a plan together but instead spent the time boasting about figures for massively untested population !!

99% are not asymptomatic.  They are separating the sick from the asymptomatic.  As best they can anyway.  A real mess.

You really have little faith in Thailand, no doctor would put an asymptomatic case on the ICU. That just does not happen. They might fill up other beds but not beds in the ICU. 

 

Also if you follow the news the field hospitals are for asymptomatic cases and the really sick people do go to hospitals.

 

It might not be streamlined yet but i am pretty sure that even in Thailand they don't put asymptomatic cases in ICU beds. That is basic and would not be done anywhere in the world.

How many of the population have been vaccinated under the  government vaccination plan.I haven't come across one .
