Vaccine rollout: Anutin denies standing in the way of VAX companies selling to private sector

Thailand's DPM and health minister Anutin Charnvirakul yester denied that the government were standing in the way of vaccine companies selling to the private sector.

He said that the companies all want to do business with the government or government agencies and not deal directly with the private sector.

Companies need to fulfil the requirements of the Food and Drug Administration in order to sell their products.

Critics have blamed this process as being slow stopping people who want to choose and pay for their own vaccine at private hospitals.

There are suggestions that this is to protect the interests of the company poroducing vaccines locally, something that the government strongly denies.

Anutin - under fire from many angles in Thailand over his role in all matter Covid - had emerged from a meeting with Zuellig Pharma importers of Moderna.

He said that he expects the Moderna vaccine to gain approval some time this month, reported Daily News

The vaccine rollout in Thailand has been criticized as slow moving and is only expected to pick up pace next month when Siam BioScience's AstraZeneca vaccine becomes widely available.

So Anutin when he opens his mouth only lies come out. The Government and health minister can surely take immediately actions. There is an emergency decree...But Anutin will not do anything. Yesterday a meeting with Moderna and somewhere in this month the approval.. Why?? Today he can talk with with Czar Prayuth and telephone the company to sent the vaccines, but no first an approval, than a committee than another meeting in the parliament and than approval of the FDA and somewhere next year we will get it... Action is needed quick and without delays...

The man is beyond incompetent, only saved by the fact the cabinet and government he's part of are the global gold-standard in incompetence and corruption in 2021 - it is why we are in the mess we are right now.  He'll do or say whatever is needed to fiscally advance his big boss and secure his own position.

And then out of the other side of his mouth he states that vaccine producers will only sell to the "government".

There seems to be a concerted effort to delay both other vaccines and making them available through private hosptials.

In the real world this guy would have been sacked by now.

The Moderna vaccine is in use in many countries with extremely competent and strict regulator agencies.  I doubt that Thailand's FDA is going to uncover something that these countries' agencies haven't noticed.  In light of Thailand's situation this should be a rubber stamp at this point.  But that's IF the government truly wanted to import this vaccine.  So far I haven't seen anything from them indicating any interest in importing western vaccines.

We're going to see this daily drip of press releases from the government in place of action from now until Siam Bioscience finally releases vaccine for public distribution.  And this daily drip includes starting appointment registration for vaccines that don't yet exist.

Exactly. It's laughable.

Knowing Thailand, I wonder if in a few years we'll learn that there was a big corruption scandal around this and agreements with China that all non-Chinese vaccines would be delayed (in exchange for some Baht, of course). It's exactly the kind of thing that would happen in Thailand.

By the end of the year we will all look back, all having been vaccinated and say, same day, same place, same smell.

What he actually meant was.....All companies will do business through government agencies, so as to make sure we get a cut of any monies being passed over.

Any entity buying vaccine needs written authorization fro mteh government to do so. Which the government thus far has refused to provide to private hospitals.

Probably a lie, so they (the government) can pass it on to the private sector at an inflated price and trouser the difference.

I agree. My understanding is that the World Health Organisation will not allow the pharmaceutical companies to sell the vaccines to anyone but Governments due to the risk/liability if someone dies after receiving the vaccine and they get sued.
The Governments around the world are taking on that risk/liability and as part of the procurement process have to sign contracts agreeing they will not sue the pharmaceutical companies.
With the Thai Government refusing to sign the private hospitals vaccine acquisition forms there is nothing the private hospitals can do as the pharmaceutical companies will not/cannot sell to them.
Unless there is a change of direction by the Thai Government there will continue to be no vaccines available privately.
