Two people reported to have died in our village from covid in the past few days, and yesterday had mass testing, so starting to think this regular 2k cases a day might not be the whole picture.

What province are you in?

Chonburi Public Health Office has just just announced that they have 56 new cases today and one more death. The total so far is now 3,547. Most new cases are in Bang Lamung/Pattaya (30), Chonburi City (6), and Sriracha (5) #COVID19 #โควิด19 #Thailand

Per the Pattaya News:

“In the last day, a total of 146 close contacts were tested from contact tracing, and 1,113 people were tested in proactive testing when medical staff goes out into the community.”

the problem is they don’t say if the 56 new cases came from contact tracing, proactive testing, or were hospital walk-ins. All we have is a very rough estimate of a positivity rate a little under 5%.

Given that hospital ICU units are fast approaching full capacity, I'm afraid the trend of your thoughts is an accurate one.

Big difference between ICU occupancy in Bangkok, and a provincial ICU.

Misinformation during an epidemic is a bad thing. If you have data concerning provincial hospital occupancy, please share.

[Update-1] Country running out of hospital beds as Covid rates hit new high

Thailand found 2,070 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, a new single-day record and the first time that the daily number of cases surpassed 2,000 since the pandemic began.

Concern is growing over hospital beds, with only 1,000 currently available across the country. At the current infection rates, medical facilities in the capital are set to be fully occupied within the next six to eight days, and country-wide within 19 days, an official said.

Well, about half that number comes from the inclusion of the belated tally  of prisoners.

Just gotta go with the numbers given and with this auspicious daily increase Thailands has overtaken China and I estimate them to now be in 94th on the worldometer list 3 places above them.

Sorry to hear that, and I would agree with you that the whole picture is not being displayed through a transparent process.  However, this has been going on since day 1 by this government.  Of course that is my opinion and not of a few others who believe they are being completely transparent.  A lack of widespread testing would allow cases to go undetected and when they die at home it is put down to underlying causes.  Unless the body was taken and an autopsy performed it is hard to say it was covid, even though we know there is a good possibility.  Again my opinion.  Stay safe

Holy cow that is a tremendous jump in cases.  That is because of the prison cases being added.  Will be nice to see the actual breakdown when it appears.  Stay safe folks.

But it's a spike, not a trend. Which is why 7 day rolling averages are commonly used. It's what statisticians call a statistical artefact. Something that doesn't accurately track with reality.

The questions still remains as to why prison infections were not reported in the daily updates.

We need a daily breakdown of infections together with over what period of time.

I doubt if the authorities have those records and even it they do, the breakdown wont be forthcoming.

I would have to agree with you.  Were the prison numbers withheld, and are they an accumulation, or is it just one days testing brought to light because of the newly released protestors being found positive with covid and it could not be hidden anymore.

So if the dates predicted for running out of beds turned out to be correct then Thailand is now in "overwhelmed" territory?

Do you mean you can't wait to see how they spin this one? They can't really say they are old cases because that might give the impression they've been hiding the infections.Diddling the digits so to speak. Now I know what that sweeping noise I was hearing is.

Well, we can all breath a sigh of relief. This government has finally taken the serious necessary action to conclusively bring this 3rd wave to a rapid conclusion. Three cheers for the government .

Such silliness is hardly unique to Thailand. Is this any different from Western politicians calling for prayers?

Absolutely correct.

In addition if we are going to have the full figures from today onwards on this then the numbers from those prisons will not just disappear after one day they should  reflect a daily pattern as they test new inmates regularly. Its going to be highly suspicious if tomorrow there just happens to be none again.

This was also less than a handfull of prisons, what about all the others around the country?

Its a national statistic, a very poor one and has lead to another peak in cases. How many more peaks will there be if they test all the other prisons throughout Thailand and are actually transparent with the numbers.
