I would agree that the vast majority of expats are happy in Thailand.    Then we have a discussion on Road Fatalities and some tool respond’s “If you don’t like it go back home”  Or we

When you see how numerous are Thai bashers on this forum, my guess is that many would prefer to be somewhere else, but for some reason ( home country too expensive ? ) they are stuck here ; Thailand must be hell for these people , day after day ????

some of these folks couldn't make it work in the country they were born in -  alcohol addictions, bad marriages, inabilities to keep a job or trouble with the authorities all play in the decisions of many to leave their home and come here. Trouble is, the main problems with them are internal not so much as where they're at. Consequently, many will never be happy (except when drinking) wherever they are, hence the constant complaining about events they cannot control..

It seems to me that you can't find many of them here at Thaivisa. ????????

Only seems to be around 20 hardcore bashers posting 20 times a day each. Common denominator is they all live on an farm or in a the jungle... slowly going around the bend ????

However, most expats (72%) are satisfied with their work-life balance (vs.  66% globally), and over two-thirds (69%) are happy with their working hours (vs. 66% globally).

Really, what a surprise. Most expats are retired , of course they are happy with work life balance and working hours !

“sufficiently happy” yes, or they would not remain here for survey !

propose that “happy” is a meaningless term for any scientific study;

possibly an emotional state of mind for the truly blessed (have it all in spades: health, love, children, wealth, passionate pursuits, etc, 0.1 %)

or those too stupid or easily satisfied or too ignorant to know what is missing.......or on drugs ...... 99.99% of “ happy” people perhaps......

If an expat posts something positive about his being happy in Thailand the replies in general are on the lines of only because you can't handle life in your own country. If he posts something negative about about Thailand the replies are usually 'if you don't like it go back home.

I think the survey was done with real expats, usually people posted here by multinational companies. Most of the foreigners in Thailand are not expats, they are economic refugees.

Actually no. Best days  of my life were in the UK.  The raves of the early 90s, the pills, the music, the friendships. Great times.

Love the UK. Love Thailand; loving one does not preclude the other.

Love is all around. Spread love. DiY.

That is not true, most expats are not retired, that s only your perception. Most expats work here. a lot of asians ( japanese, chinese etc .. .) work here.

The survey would be more meaningful if it compares with other countries in SEA.

My only gripe ref' that is you don't get public holidays etc any more.

The survey, which was carried out between 7 to 31 January 2021, had a total of 12,420 expats participating from 174 nationalities and living in 186 countries or territories.

There are only 195 countries in the world EricTh.......... if you take away the 9 countries where it probably would be difficult to find any  ex-pats --(North Korea -Antarctica  Afghanistan ...etc..etc ) what makes you think they excluded other countries from SEA.

Sorry, what I meant was that if there is a specific article comparing the countries in SEA ordered neatly in a table, it would be easier to compare.

Thailand ticks all the boxes for me... Yes, Thailand has some issues, but when compared to other popular expat locations, I'll take Thailand...

Whilst no doubt there are some who have managed to get trapped here, and I remember one admitting as much to me, I think you are making a mistake in conflating critical with unhappy.

I am happy here, and have explained why on several occasions. I am also very critical of many aspects of how the country is run, and of the people who run it - and am probably regarded by some as one of the premier Thai Bashers.

I like that virtually everyday there are several things that leave me chuckling, today it was two little girls who insisted on practising their English in a local small town 7/11, tomorrow it may be cynical amusement at the antics of some uniformed out of his depth buffoon laying down the law about vaccination.

When the pandemic is over, and I can get on a jet in Chiang Mai, arrive in Koh Samui in an hour or so. I'll definitely be happy. My sister in Canada told me two days ago that she paid $18 for a watermelon, that also makes me very happy to be here. The last 16 years have been excellent for me, not going to apologize for that.

It seems a reasonable survey result....nothing looks too out of plumb.

No - go back and have a read - was 12,000 - but you have to wonder where they asked?

Like - was it 2am at the entrance of walking street and only asking males over 60 accompanied by 2 teen females?

No, you are wrong. Go back and read the report and then apologize to person you criticize.

12,420 expats participating from 174 nationalities and living in 186 countries or territories were surveyed.

The threshold to participate was a minimum of 50 responses.  There were few countries with an excess of 75 responses. The largest responses was Germany with 950.  use some common sense and it is obvious that the conclusions for Thailand are based on less than 100 people, more likely closer to 50.

Does your sister stay in the far north or in a prison camp? That would explain high cost.  I took 10 seconds and make search.   Watermelon 11 lb  $4.97  https://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/watermelon-large-seedless/6000196088051

Considering watermelon is not in season, the price is rather good.  At least she can get something. Try getting fresh  berries in Chiang Mai out of season.

I see that large mixed garden peppers Red Yellow, orange  are 6 for  $4.99 at president Choice chain.  That's about 130 baht.  I have to pay 30 baht for decent red pepper if they are available.  That's 180 baht for 6 and they are 1/2 the size of those on sale in advert.  Walmart is hardly place for  quality fresh produce but price and quality looks  better than typical grocery store in thailand.

Did your sister tell you, she  has received or will receive  high quality vaccine, no charge and that no government minister is saying foreign people do not qualify for vaccine?   It is wonderful you can get on airplane and land in Koh Samui in an hour. Don't forget to mention the  bloated airfare or the bloated cost of taxi from airport.  Every country has plus and minuses, but the cost to maintain a good quality of life is just as expensive in Thailand as it is out of Thailand.

Thailand is wonderful until one gets a critical care illness, or loses mobility or vision. Then it is a very difficult place to be.

It was probably one of those special bred Japanese water melons. Quite a steal at 18 Dollars.

The 8-kilogram premium “Densuke” watermelon, grown only on the northern island of Hokkaido was auctioned in northern Japan for a record 650,000 yen (US$6,100) today, making it the most expensive watermelon ever sold in the country — and possibly the world. The black jumbo watermelon was purchased by a marine products dealer who said he wanted to support local agriculture. In a country where melons are a luxury item commonly given as gifts, the watermelon’s hefty price tag follows another jaw-dropping auction last month, where a pair of “Yubari” cantaloupe melons sold for a record 2.5 million yen (US$23,500).

Yes, mostly.

But with the government, Covid restrictions, vaccine options and availability, medical insurance options, visa issues, banking, land ownership, dual pricing, discrimination, etc?

Thailand is good if you have money. If no money the suicide rate is very high.

Thailand is no longer a cheap country to live or holiday in. Many things are cheaper in the Europe.
