MoPH chart showing a breakdown of weekly COVID deaths by location, with BKK accounting for a higher percentage of COVID deaths than its share of overall COVID cases. For the most recent week, Bangkok accounted for 58% of the nation's COVID deaths. But since April, BKK province has accounted for almost 32% of the country's domestic cases, and 28% of its new domestic cases reported today.

Thailand's 6,166 latest day new COVID case count reported Monday not only surpassed that of the U.S., but also its regional neighbors Malaysia and the Philippines, although Thailand's total COVID case count and current and cumulative COVID deaths remain far less:

Test and ye shall find has been my mantra, but one this government and then even some on this forum say is not needed as the hospitals are not filling up

Without a supportive policy to respond to an increase in cases, it will barely make a dent in the trajectory. The only effective solutions are lockdown/provincial travel restrictions, and accelerating vaccine rollout. That is why Australia locks down at the first hint of virus in circulation. As they know proactive testing will almost certainly not contain it, once established in the wild.

Months ago with alpha variant and partial lockdown we had thousands of cases/day and slowly rising. Fast forward to today, more infectious variant, with same partial lockdown. Of course the cases will keep rising, why wouldn't they? Who seriously thinks cases won't keep rising from here, until conditions change? The testing is sufficient to show there's a problem. Yes it would be nice to test more, ultimately it won't help much if the government doesn't act on the data. When cases are rising weekly/monthly, you don't need more testing to tell you the current strategy is failing.

On the testing front, Indonesia has pretty decent testing by virtue of cheap testing options. Around 400bt for the basic rapid test. Versus 3500bt+ in Thailand. That does not mean Indonesia has it under control, they're just as slow to react. They have closed clubs there again, but they should never have re-opened in the first place.

Testing is the primary tool used even when a lockdown is in affect in Australia or any other country

His reports are good and have been so from the off last year. He had to rely on an expat schoolteacher for most of the comment, which seemed reserved and limited - not the teacher's fault, I suppose.

She's right. Interesting to look as the daily case counts for Thailand's 67 outlying provinces during the past week. The 67 provinces EXCLUDE Bangkok, its 5 adjoining metro provinces, and four southern provinces with higher case numbers.

For those other 67 provinces, daily new COVID cases:

June 29 -- 1,459

June 30 -- 1,222

July 1 -- 1,367

July 2 -- 1,438

July 3 -- 1,737

July 4 -- 1,912

July 5 -- 2,181

It looks like testing won't make much of a difference now - resources are limited, it takes too long and from the reports It looks like the spread is nationwide. Full mass vaccination for everyone is what is required as soon as possible.

I have read some reports that dual vaccines seem good, sorry I did not save the articles.

Also some good reports of the Sinovac oit of Turkey; 80+% effective against the original strain.

Thanks. I’m not so worried about the original strain tbh, delta seems to be where it’s at.

thanks anyway ????

PHUKET: Kathu municipal schools closed over COVID concerns

PHUKET: Four municipality schools in Kathu have been closed over concerns of one parent and a student at one of the schools being confirmed as infected with COVID-19.

Kathu Municipality confirmed the school closures through an announcement posted online this morning (July 5).

The four schools in Kathu ordered closed were named as Kathu Municipal School 1 and Kathu Municipal School 2, along with the Ket Ho Child Development Center and the Kathu Child Development Center.

The four schools have been ordered closed by Kathu Mayor Chaianan Sutthikul “as a precaution” from today (July 5) through to July 18.

Yet the sandbox is moving right along.  I sure hope it does not turn into a quicksand pit.

Craziness is what it is, but then "It will be what will be", "its under control", "Will be over in a few weeks", "We have reach the peak", "Plenty of vaccines for everyone to have three", "It was only a 30 minute lunch break", "What happens in the sandbox stays in the sandbox", I am sure I missed many more clichés that have been used, but for now what I have posted is making "Cry me a river" seem inconsequential.

Schools closing, PM self isolating due to Covid exposure, I’d say things are moving along really nicely on day 5.

it all goes to show just how tenuous the whole sandbox concept is. It’s built on quicksand.

I wonder if the pm self isolating makes the international news?

Not sure, but I will send it to the Sacramento KCRA News team and see if it makes a mention there or in the Sacramento Bee.

Samut Sakhon governor threatens to close private hospitals over no COVID testing policy

This does mean that the feces has hit the fan, and this Government must be looking for the escape hatch soon.  The have truly mucked it all up.

"Samut Sakhon Governor Veerasak Vichitsangsri has threatened to ask authorities to close down all private hospitals in the province, after they refused to prove free COVID-19 tests, claiming that they do not have empty beds to accommodate those whom the tests show to be infected"

"The governor apparently made the threat after he read a Facebook post by a human resource official at Samut Sakhon Hospital, who expressed the frustration of medical personnel there for having to deal with many people who show up for COVID-19 testing, after all private hospitals in the province have rejected them"

We're still at the discussion and planning stage with just 10 days to go.

Surat Thani governor Wichawut Jinto held a meeting with concerned officials to discuss Koh Samui reopening in Koh Samui district today. They planned to implement the “Samui Plus Model” as the cabinet already allowed the southern province to reopen the island to receive tourists from July 15 on.

The Samui Plus Model covers the reopening of not only Koh Samui but also Koh Phangan and Koh Tao islands. Visitors and local people will be required to comply strictly with safety measures and local officials already had plans on medical treatment and the health screening of visitors who will arrive by air, sea and land. Military medical personnel have a rank as well as a specialisation.

Last year I had surgery carried out in the UK, on my Radial Nerve, by an RAF Wing Commander.

Needless to say.......he is a Surgeon.

I'm certain he will not object to a bit of advertising:

Wg Cdr Ankur Pandaya | BAPRAS

"He has been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan as part of his military duties"

The context:

"Joint Hospital Group (South), the largest of the UK’s four military hospital units, led by Commander Alister Witt.

More than 200 military medical personnel – a mix of Doctors, Nurses, Healthcare Assistants, and Allied Healthcare Professionals from the Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and Army – work alongside NHS colleagues to care for our patients"

Military staff very good at trauma treatment.

With some provinces almost doubling since yesterday would suggest a pretty high R0 and maybe a lack of a cap on the number of tests or not having reached a cap yet which seems to give a better idea of how fast it's spreading in some places.

You can see how doubling time is related to the R0: k = ln2/doubling time. And R0 = e^kt   If doubling time is 1.5 days the R0 is 3.89 . Note the (t) above is the infection or generation interval , about 3 days. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic_reproduction_number                                            https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32145466/  second link see fig 1. The generation interval is about one day less than serial interval

Thailand’s Department of Disease Control (DDC) has noted that the COVID-19 situation has been aggravated by viral mutations since April, with the spread of the Delta variant.

DDC deputy director-general Dr. Sophon Iamsirsithavorn said, although the initial outbreak was in the Bangkok area, it has spread to the capital’s perimeter and in crowded places, such as factories. The infection has entered communities and more households.

He said the main measures, which can help contain the outbreak, are to reduce mobility, reduce travel and reduce the risk of getting infected in workplaces. Other measures include not eating at food outlets.

Dr. Sophon added that an order will be placed for 20 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine, in addition to procurement of Sinovac and AstraZeneca. It’s necessary to negotiate a faster pace of delivery, as the company says the vaccine will be delivered around the fourth quarter of this year.
