I need to apply for the second 1 year extension based on Thai spouse in August this year.
My passport will expire April 2022.

I read somewhere that extensions are only granted until passport expires, which obviously makes sense.

Would the wisest course of action to apply for new passport right now before I apply for the 1 year extension?

I'm just thinking what happens if I show up at the immigration with a new empty passport with the old passport which would be invalidated by the embassy, would that somehow be an issue?

Remember that you need to transfer your last stamp from the old passport to the new at the same office where you got the stamp.

You certainly need to get a new passport before you apply for your extension or it will end in April of next year and you would have to apply for new one then.

Not a problem to have your stamps transferred from a old (cancelled) passport. Immigration does it all the time.

Do you have enough time left to apply for a new passport?  For some countries it can take several weeks to get one.

The normal recommendation is to get a new passport before you have less than 6 months remaining on it since many countries require 6 months remaining to enter them.

Note that your existing extension is only valid until the expiry date of your passport, so you have to do the extension in your new passport before that, and the new extension will start from the expiry date of the old passport.

I had the same problem Passport exp Mar 22 extension of stay due mid June. I am US some did the new passport all by mail and it took 12 days. the I went to IO  CW  did the transfer of stamps to new pass port and extension of stay at the same time  little over 1 1/2 hrs not counting lunch break of one hr. I also first had to go MMT for my 90  notice of address as I mailed in 7 weeks before with no return  of stamp. That why a mi got to IO CW later in the morning around 10:45. Did Bank letter the day before and up date of BBK fixed account at CW before going upstairs to IO. All worked fine.

Yes, and in due time for the new passport to arrive before you apply for extension of stay.

You need at letter from your embassy together with the new passport, and you old passport, to get the local immigration office to "move" your original visa information stamp, entry stamp and last extension from you old passport to your new passport, before you apply for a new extension of stay. It might cost you a small fee around 500 baht.

Remember to update your bank account, and anywhere else your passport number is used, which for example could be Drivers License, to the new passport number.

US Passport backlog right now. Have no idea if this applies in Thailand, but wait times are supposedly longer in the states. I would think it does not apply here. Or could it?

It is still about 2 to 3 weeks for a passport applied for overseas. The 2 to 3 weeks is shown on the embassy website and that includes those done by mail to the embassy.
