Branch offices of state-owned banks, which are located in malls or department stores in the 13 “Dark Red” provinces, including Bangkok, will suspend their services, starting tomorrow (Tuesday July 20th) until further notice, according to an announcement by the Government Financial Institutions Association (GFA).

The move is in line with the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA)’s tightening of lockdown restrictions in the “Dark Red” zone, to contain escalating COVID-19 infections.

The state-run banks include the Government Savings Bank, the Government Housing Bank, the Bank of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives, the Export-Import Bank of Thailand, the Islamic Bank of Thailand, the SME Development Bank and the Thai Credit Guarantee Corporation (TCG).

They seem to be talking only about small branch type facilities - and this will also include all banks, not just Government.

Banks close when they have no more cash. Any reports of atms being empty? This def happened in other countries. May be just a slick move on the banks’ part.

Yes, the sort of places that the overwhelming majority of people go to for services.

This might be to prevent a run on those government banks... must be trouble at mill

Bank Holiday is what FDR called it.

These closures make sense.  If you read the article branches in department stores and malls in deep red zones are closed.  Stand alone branches are still open but with reduced hours.  Outside of the deep red zones all branches are open.

There's nothing sinister about this at all, they did the same thing last year. It's all about reducing footfall and crowding in the malls and department stalls.

They are only talking about branches in malls.  The malls have been ordered closed.  So of course the banks would have to close too.
