Anutin will meet with representatives from importers of AstraZeneca, Sinovac, J&J, Moderna, Sinopharm and Pfizer this afternoon to talk about procuring more vaccines.

Should be an interesting meeting if they are all in the same room at the same time. How you you walk around the fact that you want mrna vaccines and not inactivated ones, without stepping on toes?

Southeast Asia’s worst wave

With cases still soaring and more and more bodies lined up in Thailand, the battle here is far from over. There is no shortage of devastation or despair in our country, felt in hospital corridors, on the front page of the newspaper and on the dinner tables in our homes.

But Thailand is not alone in this fight.

Since 1st April 13,806 children have contradicted the virus and 4 of those died.

Royal College of Paediatricians advises against vaccinating healthy children

Thailand’s Royal College of Paediatricians on Monday advised parents not to vaccinate healthy children against Covid-19 until more is known about the vaccines.

The advice was part of a five-point guideline for treatment of novel coronavirus infections among children issued by the college.

It noted that 13,806 children under 18 years old had contracted Covid-19 from April 1 to June 15, accounting for 7.8 per cent of all infections.

Samut Sakhon's numbers have been updated today from 798 to 814. Thats over 1,500 in two days with 322 being discharged today. Around 3 wks ago daily numbers were below or around 300. 2 months ago low to mid 100's so if it keeps going up may see a possible 10 fold increase in less than 3 mths.

Was that adjusted for vaccination rates? The old are vaccinated at a much higher rate than the young.

You can probably check that out yourself by seeking out the study and reporting back

This is the first time I've seen ANY information from the Thai government on the numbers and/or share of foreigners getting COVID vaccinations in Thailand:

If the numbers are to be believed, it confirms and shows that foreigners in Thailand thus far have been receiving vaccines at a far lower rate, 3.47%, compared to the Thai populace at large, where the comparable one-shot percentage is about 15% right now.

Way down at the bottom, says 3,925 Brits and 2,559 Americans are among the 170,007 foreigners to have received vaccines, which means at least one shot. The chart says about 39% of that entire vaccinated group, or 66,917 people, have received two doses.

More than 60% of the foreign nationals to receive vaccines in Thailand thus far (104,624) are Chinese nationals and people from Myanmar. (The Chinese government struck a deal with Thailand that free vaccinations would be offered early on in the vaccination rollout to all Chinese nationals using a portion of Sinovac vaccines donated by China, back before vaccinations formally opened for foreign nationals.)

But perhaps most amazingly, with the very large number of foreign national retirees in Thailand, the report says only 1,228 foreign nationals age 60 and above -- the age group considered most vulnerable to COVID -- have received vaccines thus far.  The largest share vaccinated among that small group are Chinese, Brits and Americans. The government's efforts thus far obviously are not reaching the foreign nationals most in need!

It's PITIFUL that six weeks after the official start in early June of Thailand's COVID vaccination program for elderly foreign nationals, only 1,200+ have received vaccines.

And right now, one of the few official vaccination venues that's still open and accepting foreign nationals is limiting access to ONLY those age 75 and above:

We are working with the Thai authorities to agree how the national vaccination programme can priorities all vulnerable people, irrespective of nationality. We will continue to provide updates.

I am guessing that the bulk of those foreign nationals below the age of 60 are in Phuket and Samui. I know several foreigners in Phuket who received the vaccine through the thai company for which they were working. Bound to be some in other provinces as well, but given the push to vaccinate Phuket in particular, I bet most are here.

Given the tiny portion of age 60+ folks among those having received vaccinations, I had a similar assumption -- though there's no way to prove it from the chart itself -- that most of the foreigners to receive vaccines are those who received them via being employed in jobs covered by the Thai Social Security system, which had earlier and official access to vaccinations than other foreigners.

The employed (and thus likely younger foreigners group) weren't consigned to the Thai government's miserable and failed Intervac wasteland that was reserved for the age 60+ and chronic condition folks -- those who need the vaccines the most!

The three young people I know who were vaccinated, were forced to do so by their employer and got two jabs of sinovac. They were employed by hotel groups. Others did as I did and simply registered through the Phuket must win app. No request for pink ID cards, just nationality and passport number, more or less. Sinovac available on demand, AZ now and then. But Phuket is the golden goose to be coddled at all costs. From a personal point of view, I’m not complaining, but it is grossly unfair.

This is getting typically Thai weird... So now, the Bang Sue station vaccination center has been accepting some number of daily foreigner walk-ins for vaccination but only those age 75 and above. But the same place is now accepting registrations from foreigners age 60 and above...

"The Central Vaccination Center - Bangsue Grand Station also accepts limited walk-in registration for same-day vaccination for foreigners aged 75 and over between 09:00 - 16:00 daily."

Also, the form doesn't indicate when the people registering via that method will actually be able to be vaccinated. But at least it's supposed to be the AZ vaccine instead of the Sinovac one. And, Richard Barrow in his post on this program says those registering today would be able to go for vaccinations on Thursday.

Very few over the age of 75 years have been given their initial dose.  I believe it was around 19 walk ins today.  Now they expecting a rush for foreigners over 60, thus adopting the registration process for bookings.

IMPACT Muang Thong Thani, the largest Exhibition and Convention center in Thailand, has been transformed into the country’s first and largest ‘Exhibition Hall Hospital’ for COVID-19 patients. Its successful model has inspired the expansion of the ‘Airport Hospital’ which will soonly be the next project to support more numbers of new cases.

Somehow, the Thai government today is back to publicly claiming that they'll be able to source/supply 100 million COVID vaccine doses during 2021, including 61 million of their own locally produced AstraZeneca vaccine.  Even though, they now acknowledge the producer, Siam Bioscience, likely won't be able to deliver the government's promised 10 million doses per month for the rest of the year, and instead, likely only half that amount per month at best.

Via Google Translate:

https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=th&tl=en&u=https%3A%2F%2Fpr.moph.go.th%2F%3Furl%3Dpr%2Fdetail%2F2%2F04%2F161518%2F&sandbox=1

The Ministry of Public Health has provided 100 million doses of vaccine to people by 2021.

...

"Today, the Department of Disease Control and Pfizer Co., Ltd. have signed a contract to supply 20 million doses of mRNA vaccine after the cabinet approved it. It will be delivered as planned by the fourth quarter of 2021. The 1.5 million doses of Pfizer vaccine donated by the US government to Thailand will arrive at the end of July.

Dr. Opas continued, The supply of the COVID-19 vaccine has been signed and will deliver on contract terms of 100 million doses in 2021, including 61 million doses of AstraZeneca, 19 million doses of Sinovac and 20 million doses of Pfizer.

...

“For the news that we need 3 million [AstraZeneca] doses per month. not true. Monthly demand is at 10 million doses. According to recent negotiations, the company will send us at least 5-6 million doses per month. depending on the production capacity If it can produce more, it will deliver more,” said Dr. Opas."

Let's see... 5 plus months left in 2021. They've already received about 5,5 million local AZ doses. That means they'd need to receive about 11 million doses per month on average for the remainder of the year to meet their supposed goal/target of 61 million local AZ doses for 2021...  How's that gonna happen?

And what's become of the government's talk a few days ago about trying to prevent the local AZ producer from continuing to export two-thirds or so of their production to other countries, so that Thailand can take a larger share? (Not saying I think that's a good or the right idea...)  But, no mention of that in this very long announcement/statement from the MoPH.

Probably because the 75 years+ plus farangs could go to the trouble of traveling to Bang Sue amid the pandemic and all that entails, wait around in long queues with the majority Thai population being served there, and then face the prospect of being turned away because the walk-in quota for the day has been filled... What's not to like about that!

Lerdsin Hospital in Bangkok’s Bang Rak area announced on Tuesday that it was suspending its emergency services and would no longer accept any trauma cases.

The reason for this is that the hospital is overwhelmed by Covid-19 cases, and it does not have enough medical personnel.

The Facebook announcement said emergency services will be reopened once the situation returns to normal.

I'm not usually the quitter type, however this has just about worn me out. After watching all the failed apps and cancelled appointments etc .....I finally decided to give the recent (Sunday) appointment jab at SCG a try.

Despite getting online VERY early Friday evening, it was another failure. Allocation full. I believe it was VERY small allocation per embassy.

There is also the recent merry go round at the 2 hospitals in Bangkok where the spots are very limited per day and booked out very quickly.

In my 60,s I have given up on this process.

Will wait till end of this year and hope more vaccine available.

Any Johnny Lang fans might know song

I'm out.

Headline from tonight's ThaiPBS news broadcast in English:

"Private sector skeptical over lockdown success, without mass screening, vaccinations"

Really?? You mean, we're not the only ones who are skeptical???  Got news for you ThaiPBS... no mass screenings or mass vaccinations are anywhere on the Thai horizon.

Also worth noting, Monday's 248,648 dose result reported above -- coming at the height of Thailand's COVID outbreak thus far -- was one of the lowest weekday vaccination totals since the government's campaign began in early June.  They're always low/slow on the weekends, but why now on a Monday as well?  Perhaps they just don't have enough doses to hand out???

After dropping to their lowest level in a week on Monday, new COVID cases reported Tuesday for Bangkok province sharply rebounded upward to their highest number in the past week with 2,764 new cases. Bangkok is the second line on the chart below showing daily totals for the past week. The first line is total domestic cases for Thailand for those same days:

Also worth noting, Bangkok province is now reporting a COVID case fatality rate (CFR) of 1.56% for the current third wave of the pandemic since the beginning of April. That means 1,835 official COVID deaths during that time out of 117,692 official COVID cases. That's almost twice as high as the comparable CFR for Thailand as a whole.
