PHUKET: Phuket Governor Narong Woonciew has confirmed that he will order every municipality on the island to identify isolated locales in their areas that may be unsafe for visitors and not suitable for tourists to visit as part of a campaign to ramp up tourist safety on the island.

The move follows the killing of Swiss tourist Nicole Sauvain-Weisskopf at Ao Yon Waterfall on Phuket’s east coast last week.

Governor Narong yesterday called for cooperation from all sectors of the community “to be a good host in taking care of the safety of tourists”

While extracting as much baht as you can.

Here's an idea, why not deputise a large contingent of the local unemployed and get them out on the beat 24/7....

Seriously? More ne'er do wells hanging around tourists is your best idea?  People go on holiday to be left alone on the whole.

Perhaps you are thinking of North Korea, with a permanent escort.

No I'm not, I'm thinking about not ending up dead when being alone.

It's a very sad tragedy with the Swiss lady, but beginning to declare zones not safe for tourists will in my opinion not improve the tourists' trust in Phuket as a safe destination, rather the opposite.

Thai elites obviously don't think like farangs.  It will filter back to home countries that there are places all over Phuket (or other places in Thailand) declared "not safe for tourists." Then you can drive another nail into the tourism coffin lid.  These people can't grasp that independent-minded farang tourist don't come to be herded into safe bubbles and baby-sat by a nanny-state minder.  Just more bad news and poor public relations handling by people who don't have much of a grasp on farang culture.
