Thailand reports 17,984 COVID-19 cases, 292 more deaths

Thailand on Saturday (August 28) reported 17,984 new COVID-19 cases, 20,535 recoveries and 292 additional deaths over the past 24 hours.

● 20,535 recoveries

 17,660 new infections

 324 prison / prison infections

Saturday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 1,157,555 with 10,879 deaths.

(Total infections since April 1: 1,128,692)

The news comes as Thailand will lift most coronavirus restrictions on retail and dining from next month and permit gatherings of up to 25 people in Bangkok and other high risk areas, its COVID-19 task force said on Friday.

Easing restrictions and adjusting measures were necessary to revive the economy safely, the task force said, as the country battles its worst coronavirus outbreak and struggles to ramp up vaccinations, with only 1 in 10 people inoculated so far.

From Sept. 1, shopping malls, salons, barber shops, foot massages and sports fields in 29 high-risk provinces including Bangkok, are allowed to resume operations, while restaurants can open to diners, the task force said.

Rising infections, bad press and burdensome rules still real threats to the slowing Phuket Sandbox

The Phuket Sandbox has now come to represent Thailand’s efforts to refloat its foreign tourism industry. Last week saw Police Lieutenant General Surachate Hakparn or ‘Big Joke’ on the island with a mission to improve security for visitors, particularly ahead of an expected invasion of Russian tourists in November after the Sputnik V vaccine has now been approved for inclusion in the scheme allowing Russians to apply for Certificates of Entry.

Covid-19 hospitalization risk doubles with Delta variant, UK study suggests

By Jacqueline Howard, CNN

Updated 2232 GMT (0632 HKT) August 27, 2021

(CNN)  A new study adds to growing evidence suggesting that the Delta coronavirus variant is not only highly transmissible, but also more dangerous.

Covid-19 patients infected with the Delta variant had about double the risk of hospitalization compared to those infected with the Alpha variant, according to the study published Friday in the journal Lancet Infectious Diseases.

"The results suggest that patients with the Delta variant had more than two times the risk of hospital admission compared with patients with the Alpha variant," researchers from Public Health England and the University of Cambridge wrote in their new study...

Still running around 40% positives from testing. The US has half of the population fully vaccinated and hospitalisations and deaths are on the way up as the country opens up. The unvaccinated are the drivers of numbers going up. Thailand <10% fully vaccinated.

Two things. One: Average tests across all provinces is around 660 which is extremely low. Two: Someone I know has just been given their 2nd AZ jab just 3 weeks after the first. All 155 others who work at the same place also had the 2nd jab after 3 wks. This is madness. How much is this happening to boost vax numbers?

Cases look to be really going down in places except in Phuket.

There does seem to be a sea-change and a more optimistic feeling around, especially with the restrictions being relaxed.   Let's hope it continues that way.

You actually believe the figures put out by this pseudo government?  They need to get the figures down so they can open the country by October 1.  So they massage the figures in their favour.

Both correct - the numbers are going down (no idea about the Covid in the country). They will open uo October no matter what, it's called the new paradigm (the word used by the speaker on the English language CCAS). A propaganda word for Uturn so the general does no have to admit the old policy was MUBAR

I believe one of their flip flips will be coming on this very soon after they realize the implications for the requirement of vaccinations in a country where vaccinations are low due to their poor plan. Here are some interesting questions being raised:

Most dark red provinces have very low vaccination rates for fully jabbed people, Chonburi on 30% have had one shot, How does AZ work in this with such a long time frame between shots? Will it be accepted as it is to enter Phuket on one shot? The number of potential customers who are fully vaccinated is low. Additionally, those fully vaccinated are elderly, disabled, bed-ridden, vulnerable, and/or at-risk and not likely to be regular diners or be willing to go out in the current situation anyways.

Thai venues, etc may not be checked at all while “foreign-owned” restaurants and franchises, or those venues in malls could be a big potential target for law enforcement in some areas.

Will kids be exempt? Or do they have to take a test before eating? If so, many people will skip dinner with the family.

Good.... so there are again 20.500 cases inclusive the rapid tests, because we don't see them back in the daily numbers anymore..All because of showing how good the lock down and the vaccinations are working.. The best example is the Sandbox Phuket.... 75% of the people were vaccinated and the numbers of infections are rising day by day...Yes they will say it are the unvaccinated people but the Sandbox started on 1 July with 75% vaccinated people and they probably have given in the last 2 months almost the rest... and still....... but Okay more recoveries and less cases and we are happy but wait several weeks.. the example is the Sandbox

I reported only on what I saw in the numbers the government reported.  If you have read any of my posts over the last several months you might understand where I stand on the subject.  Today I just do not feel like posting as I usually would.  Today I lost a long time friend, not from Covid, but from being hit head on by a wrong way driver.  He was a dedicated family man, and a person who stood up against those who thought laws were not meant for them.

As I predicted weeks ago, they are jumping the gun on reopening and I think it will prove to be an unmitigated disaster.

Why do I think this? Well, I do not believe that the lockdown has been effective decreasing the number of cases. Because cases have been down a couple of thousand (not really if you include rapid tests), doesn't mean that it is now safe and we can all go back to normal, but this will be the message that relaxing the lockdown will have.

There are simple not enough Thais vaccinated with quality vaccines to make safe the population if they want to open up again.

I also think they are in a catch 22 situation. They are unwilling to subsidise those people affected by the lockdowns but they cannot keep businesses closed because dissatisfaction is growing and becoming militant.

At this point it is damage limitation for them and the only scenario I see is it getting worse.

They don't care, they know they messed up big time and will never recover from that, so may as well just keep on messing up or more accurately "give up" - what will be will be and since there is no accountability in Thailand why would they give a ##, plastic bag treatment on a bigger scale
