Drop in Bangkok cases spurs BMA to reconsider community isolation centres

 

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will next week see which of the city’s 61 community isolation centres should be kept open now that the number of new Covid-19 cases has dropped significantly.

 

At the meeting, it was decided that adjustments will be made based on the number of patients. For instance, only a few staff will be kept at centres with no patients, so they can be at hand in case there is a new eruption of infections.

 

Meanwhile, isolation centres in schools may be closed to prepare for the return of students.

On 1st Sept there were 24,161 admitted daily

On 22nd Sept there were 41,088 admitted daily

 

While everything else, critical care, those on ventilators etc are on the way down, not sure why this should be increasing

Interesting observation. There may be three candidate explanations:

- the flatness suggests It's related to capacity. Has care capacity been increased recently?

- acute illness symptoms leading to admission only occur after a delay. (But I think I read it was rather quick for the delta variant)

- the other indicators are not very reliable

Which of the 3,458 variants uploaded by Thailand to the GISAID global database is the "single time" you recall? 

 

Surely not the first patient discovered outside China that Thailand sequenced before China belatedly released the genome to the world. Probably not yesterday's six new entries, or the four new Delta variants discovered and uploaded last month.

 

You likely mean a sub-variant of an Egyptian strain, already in the UK, that the UK tried to call 'Thai' when Thailand discovered it it an Egyptian pilot before entering Thailand.  Note, linage C.36.3 dates to Jan 4 well before Thailand.  See here.

Covids not sitting idly by it seems. We know it's everywhere, but until stuff like this pops up the government wants to play like it's going away thanks to their stellar efforts. If these tests were from ATK kits then those 400 will not show up in the daily stats as a case.

Nonthaburi rolls out COVID-19 vaccine to migrant workers:

 

Thailand’s central province of Nonthaburi has begun to roll out COVID-19 vaccines for migrant workers registered inside the province on Wednesday.

Those eligible for the vaccines must be 18 years and above, and were mostly from the neighboring countries of Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia.

They will receive a cross dose of Sinovac and AstraZeneca.

Wonder what happened to the plan in vaccinating with AZ first and then Pfizer second, as I saw yesterday that Starting October 1 Thailand will be vaccinating with Sinovac as the first jab and then AZ.  Everyday another twist and turn, just like with the Opening up here in Bangkok due to Covid cases being one of three points that must be rectified before they say they can open.  As always stay safe and protect yourself and families.

The problem with the vaccination of school kids is the CRA, which earlier issued a royal decree authorising itself to import and distribute vaccines on an emergency basis, went ahead with vaccinating school kids with Sinopharm, based on its own review of data, without waiting for FDA's approval of SP for kids. Perhaps the royal decree authorised them to bypass the FDA but the FDA did approve SP for adults before they imported it. There is apparently some anger from parents who were pushed by schools to agree to let their kids get SP because they weren't told they were being asked to approve a vaccine that is not approved for kids by the FDA (or WHO).   The Thai FDA has approved Pfizer for 12-17 year olds and that will be rolled out soon, or has maybe started. 

 

CRA's initiative to import SP was very welcome at the time there was a chronic shortage and the only alternative for many was SV anyway.  Many private firms were able to get their staff vaccinated with SP well ahead the schedule offered by the government thanks to CRA. Now there is more AZ available and some Pfizer has arrived it is unclear what role SP still has to play in the vaccine roll out, particularly after the government switched from SV+SV to SV+AZ.  Since SP is similar to SV, people must assume that SP+SP is no better than the now obsolete SV+SV but there has been authorisation for SP+AZ.  CRA obviously has a very useful role to play and is able to cut through red tape effectively.  Hopefully it will be able to import mRNA vaccines in the near future.

Thailand has pushed back plans to re-open Bangkok and some other major cities to foreign arrivals until November, due to vaccination rates falling short of targets, a senior official said on Wednesday.

 

Officials earlier this month said they planned to welcome vaccinated tourists without quarantine to major cities like Bangkok, Hua Hin, Pattaya and Chiang Mai in October to revive the country’s crucial tourism sector.

 

"Cities we've targeted have not reached 70% vaccination rates and so we have to push out the date to November," Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) governor Yuthasak Supasorn told Reuters.

Numbers of severe COVID-19 cases, those requiring ventilators declining

 

The number of severe COVID-19 cases and those requiring ventilators has fallen in the past three weeks, but small clusters of infections have increased in upcountry provinces, as a result of social gatherings, such as funerals, parties and merit-making ceremonies.

 

Director of the Disease Control and Emergency Health Hazards Division Dr. Chawetsan Namwat, said today (Wednesday) that, compared to September 1st, the number of lung infections today dropped by almost 1,500 and the number of patients requiring ventilators has dropped by almost 300.

 

Overall, he said that the graph moved in a downward direction in August and September, but he pointed out that the numbers of infections in upcountry provinces remain unstable, due to the emergence of new clusters at social gatherings.
