The Education Ministry announced on Saturday that as of Thursday, more than 864,000 students in the 12-18 age range had received one jab of the Pfizer mRNA vaccine.

Though the Royal College of Paediatricians has advised that boys aged 12-16 be only given one jab to prevent the risk of myocarditis or heart inflammation, the Public Health Ministry is reconsidering this advice.

“The ministry will next Wednesday discuss whether boys in the 12-16 age group should get a second jab,” deputy government spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek said.

“Hopefully we will have a conclusion before October 25, when medics will start administering second jabs.

Southern surge in COVID-19 cases sees daily cases jump by 20% on Friday as doctors issue warning

New outbreak comes as Bangkok is preparing ‘swab hubs’ to cater for a strong inflow of foreign tourists from November as Thailand ramps up its reopening process. Thai public health officials are warning the public to still exercise caution as the country’s overall vaccination rate has not yet reached the targeted 70% of the population nationwide particularly with the popular Loy Krathong Festival due in mid-November.

Thai officials are working to confront an escalating outbreak of the COVID-19 virus in five southern provinces with the country’s Rural Doctors Society warning of a dangerous surge.
