Richard, once again you make too much sense so for sure you do not

make very good Thai politician material.  I sure do hope that Thailand

really does want tourists to return, and eventually will drop the need for some special COVID

insurance which is just more money a tourist has to pay beyond the regular insurance

costs we pay in our own countries, to travel abroad.  Why is the Thailand pass or COE needed as well

just more nonsense from the great PM and gang.

Geezer

Actually it does make sense that they impose the insurance, It avoids burden on the state. Of course tit would (is ?) be unfair for them to ask the tourist to purchase an insurance from a particular list (Thai insurance for the matter) and on top of an existing insurance. That is called travel insurance and most of the seasoned travellers hold one. It is kind of the same policy when one asks an EU visa and must show a 30.000 euro travel insurance

My understanding is that it's largely private hospitals that are being hurt, not government ones.

In any case, it's often the case that the patient must pay the hospital, then try to reclaim later from the insurance company.  The patient therefore still has an incentive to do a moonlight flit.
