Thailand reports 9,742 new COVID-19 cases, 74 deaths

Thailand on Saturday (October 23) reported 9,742 new COVID-19 cases, 10,182 recoveries and 74 additional deaths over the past 24 hours. 

 

▶︎ Total infections since April 1: 1,812,268

▶︎ Total recoveries since since April 1: 1,693,203

 

Saturday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 1,841,131 with 18,699 deaths.

 

The news comes as Thailand announced rules on Friday for its quarantine-free reopening to visitors from 45 countries, in an effort to revive an economy struggling to recover from the collapse of its vital tourism sector.

 

Thailand, one of the Asia-Pacific's most popular tourist destinations, has for the past 18 months enforced strict pandemic entry rules that have been criticised in the travel industry for being too restrictive and onerous.

 

COVID-19 has cost Thailand about 3 million tourism-dependent jobs and an estimated $50 billion a year in revenue. Since July it reopened Phuket and Samui islands in pilot projects.

UPDATE: 9,742 confirmed cases, 1,033 probable cases (ATK), and 74 deaths (1.02%). Out of 101,803 patients , 43,498 are in hospital, 50,526 in hospitel and 6,173 in home/community isolation. There are 2,452 in a serious condition (-133) with 560 on ventilators (-23) #Thailand

Out and about yesterday and it was crowded everywhere including the Wild Animal Safari in Bangkok.  Driving through I felt like I was in the Ploenchit traffic between the malls....lol

 

It is definitely showing a downward trend with the numbers, watching the news this morning they were showing how busy the ferries and boats were going out to the Islands for the holiday weekend.  Hopefully with folks vaccinated things may continue to trend downward, very slowly so far, but oly time will tell and then of course starting in 8 days Thailand opens up to "Quarantine Free", yeas Free and being stuffed up in a AQ or SHA+ hotel for 24 to 36 hours are not the same thing.

 

Waiting to see the vaccinations of Moderna start for those who ordered i and then see how that may increase vaccinations as well.

 

ATK tests are allowed for use by the folks living in Thailand prior to traveling so why not allow those who tested negative via a PCR test prior to boarding utilize them at the Airport instead of requiring a PCR test.....one thing comes to mind...Money

 

Stay safe and keep vigilant with your social distancing and such as crowds slowly increase I did notice that Central World has started erecting the Christmas decorations.

An increase in case numbers is inevitable. It may take a month or two to get really bad, but there's no doubt it will happen.

You're most likely right, an increase is inevitable, especially once bars and clubs reopen and tourists come back in large numbers.  "Really bad" is rather subjective. Nothing about Covid can be described as "good". We just need to live with it.

NHSO seeks additional Bt20 billion to cover increasing cost of Covid-19 treatment

 

The National Health Security Office (NHSO) has proposed the government to allocate additional budget of Bt20.82 billion to cover the increasing cost of Covid-19 treatment for patients in home isolation and community isolation centres nationwide, said NHSO secretary-general Dr Jadet Thammathat-Aree on Friday.

 

“The cost of Covid-19 treatment during May to July was at around Bt5 to 7 billion,” he said. “However, as the number of daily infections increased, the treatment cost also rose to Bt11 billion in August and then to Bt15 billion in September, well above NHSO’s estimation and therefore forced us to seek additional budget.”

If this is the case, it will be primarily be Thais passing the infection to Thais.

 

The foreigners coming in will be double vaxxed and will have tested negative. Even if they pick up the virus once in Thailand, double vaxxed people carry a lesser viral load (as the latest research shows), and also their immune system rids the body of the virus faster.

 

The recent entrants will also have their movement monitored via the Mor Chana app, whereas foreigners currently in Thailand are not required to download that app nor have movements monitored. Not all foreigners currently in Thailand have been vaxxed, and not all have been or will be tested. Similarly, Thais are not required to download the app, even if neither vaxxed nor tested. The new system has a lot of the 'rules for the sake of rules' and not a whole lot of logic.

 

The opening of many venues, which may happen as Thailand relaxes its restrictive measures, will put Thais in touch with other Thais to a greater extent that currently. Not all of these Thai workers will be double vaxxed, so they will be more vulnerable than the vaxxed.

 

If a surge does develop, I suspect the reaction will be to close the borders, which in light of who the actual carriers and transmitters of the virus are, is not logical. Closing venues where infections are found to spread easily would make more sense, but closing borders---when the entrants would be negative-testing, double vaxxed people---would make no sense. Thus, that is what they likely will do.

Latest data from the worldometer ranking table for deaths/million of population over the past 7 days shows Thailand at 69th, down one place from yesterday and 21 places below the UK. 

 

The number of deaths over the past week has also fallen to 7 deaths/million of population, down 15% over the 7 day period. 
 

These numbers along with the drop in numbers of people in a serious condition and on ventilators support the decision to open up for quarantine free tourism from next month as the vaccination program seems to be effective and gathering pace at around 40% now being fully vaccinated and the 70% target by year end on schedule.

Thailand is open for tourism again, sort of

 

Quarantine-free arrival, except that you’ll still need to book at least 1 night of stay in an approved hotel or AQ (alternative quarantine). No bars are open (officially) and, in most parts of the country, most shops remain closed. In tourist-dependent places like Phuket, more than 90% of the formerly open shops remain closed.

 

There is a long, long journey back for 10s of thousands of businesses that have been shuttered, some for more than 18 months. Most of these businesses will never open again. But, in time, new operators will come forward and pry open the doors as the travellers start heading back to Thailand. None of this will happen immediately, maybe not for many years.

Was speaking to a friend yesterday who has 2 teenage sons here in the UK.

He says the covid situation has calmed down in their schools but as you say Thailand seems intent on draconian rules and regulations for schools.

The 3rd wave had led to 1.81 million cases and 18,605 deaths since April 1 with a mortality rate of 1.03%. There are 101,803 patients who are being treated at hospitals. Of that, 2,452 are in critical condition including 560 on ventilators.
