LET’S BE CLEAR HERE

Footballers are being asked to lead the way because they have a high profile and can therefore mobilize public support and grab our policy makers’ attention. But it is not their responsibility to safeguard Britain’s nurses in the long term – that has to be the responsibility of our government.

The money donated by footballers on May 13 2007 will make a significant difference to the lives of several thousand people. It will go into a nurses’ hardship fund, which nurses will be able to access. Given how tough life as a nurse nowadays is, with inadequate pay, high stress, large student loans and no job security, having access to a hardship fund may make the difference between a nurse being able to continue nursing and having to quit.

But however much money our footballers donate to our nurses they will not be able to solve the nursing crisis on their own. The players who do come on board serve as an inspiration to each of us to take responsibility for the kind of society in which we live, the kinds of values we want to have, and the kinds of political choices that we want our political leaders to make.

CAMPAIGN MANIFESTO

Nurses should not be paid less than all other professional key public sector workers. It is unjust that a nurse earns less than a tube driver, social worker, and policeman.

No student nurse should have to quit his or her course because he or she cannot afford her rent.

Newly qualified nurses should be guaranteed work upon graduation. It is criminal that because of NHS job freezes, thousands of nurses are facing the prospect of no job this year.

The government must commit to addressing the projected shortage of nurses that is looming - now. We cannot afford to wait. All our lives are at risk if the nurse-to-patient ratio falls, because insufficient nurses mean slower recovery rates and a greater chance of death.

Just because nursing is a vocation doesn’t mean nurses should be exploited, No one who chooses to spend their lives caring for others should find it impossible to live a decent life themselves as a consequence.

WHO I AM

My name is Noreena Hertz. I normally write books and campaign on things like Third World debt, global poverty, and sweatshop labour. My books are published in 15 languages and my ideas have changed government policies in many countries.

At the end of last year I decided to use my campaigning experience and focus on a crisis happening much closer to home – the plight that our nurses are facing. I don’t only have an intellectual interest in the subject – when I was a teenager my mother was really ill. I spent a lot of time in hospitals and saw what an amazing job nurses were doing, not only tending to her but also supporting me and my younger sister. I am really glad to be launching this campaign, and have been overwhelmed by the support that the footballing community has given me so far – a world I knew very little of only a few months back. I hope you will tell your friends about this campaign and sign up and support it. With your help we will be able to give something really substantial back to all our nurses. They deserve it.

Even I give money to charity ( sometimes :o ) and I am one of the lowest paid ferrangs in LOS !!!!!!!!.

I am going to wait and hear the full story before slagging of chelski and all the players who didnt donate.

It reminds me of a similar story regarding Paradon Shrichapan the thai tennis player, after the tsunami he got slagged off for only donating 10,000 baht for the victims and I remember backing him up and saying he didnt have to give sod all in the first place ( anyone can do what they want with their own money , they have earned it ) , though after getting slaggged of in the thai press he eventually gave a few million.

I'm sure those players who didnt donate will get slagged off by the brittih press and hopefully it will have the same results , though those lads should be used to bad media by now :bah: .

P.S- I was really happy to see that Steven Gerrard , Jamie Carragher and Robbie Fowler all donated , true scousers. Now all you need to do is get the rest of them to lads :o;) .

And give the nurses some more cash :D:D:D:D:bah:

Well at least on the basis of this West Ham qualify for Europe :o

So really it's not a thread about praising teams for donating, it's just another anti Chelsea thread.

I can just imagine some of your posts Hammer

What's Phuket like?

OK, but Chelsea are crap.

How do you make a meat pie?

In the oven, but Chelsea are crap

Who's the biggest :D on Thai Visa?

Moron. Nobody has said Chelsea are crap (do get try and keep up). And if you had the wit to realise it , it was as much pointing out that the stereotype concerning the Totts ("yids") was a false one. I also found it ironic that the richest Club in Europe couldn't find the cash to donate to this cause,

Now pass on, sonny, nothing for you here.
