Thailand cave rescue: UK diver says boys were in 'mortal danger every second underwater' as he relives heroic mission

The Rescue tells the against-all-odds story of the world-famous cave rescue by divers in Thailand in 2018, after a team of young footballers and their coach became trapped by flooding. Sky News speaks to one of those divers, John Volanthen, as well as co-director Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi.

It was the evening of 2 July 2018 when British divers Rick Stanton and John Volanthen emerged from the murky, dank monsoon rainwater that had flooded Thailand's Tham Luang Nang Non cave system, immediately realising they had found what they were looking for.

 

Twelve young football players and their coach had been trapped underground about two kilometres into the cave for 10 days by this point, and both Stanton and Volanthen had mentally prepared themselves to find bodies in the water.

 

 

 

But one by one, the divers' torchlight slowly made out 13 desperate faces in a pitch-black chamber. "Thank you," the exhausted boys can be heard telling the pair, in footage that was later beamed round the world. "Thank you, thank you."

Total <deleted>.  If it wasn't for the international cave diving volunteers the boys would have never been saved.  They had to teach the Thais how to navigate narrow sections by holding their air tanks in front of them instead of wearing them on their backs.

The Thai Navy did the heavy lifting and many servicemen would have laid down their lives trying, even though they knew they were ill equipped and untrained in that environment. One indeed did. It was a matter of national pride. Without them, those kids would not have made it out.

Utter rubbish, please don't make up claims.

Prayut thanked everybody - foreigners and Thais - for their efforts.  The government even made a 30 second TVC and broadcast it overseas thanking everyone.  "An entire country is one in heartfelt thanks.  Without national boundaries working in unity, the world is one.  Thank you."

So please, take your claptrap elsewhere, it is not wanted or needed here (but you'll get the rest of them going - I see some have already taken the bait).

Credit where credit is due.

Agree, credit where credit is due, however - the navy seals aren't the only ones who deserve credit and inferring they alone ensured the rescue was a success is a bit over the top.  They were no more important than the somtam lady or the tea lady and thousands of others in supporting the mammoth effort that went into the rescue.

Ok, good to know, thanks.

So they didn't thank everyone and they didn't broadcast a TVC overseas to thank everyone.  They said it was all Thais only.  You truly live in a fantasy world.

This place is like boomer central sometimes. So we have a story to recall the great achievement done in rescuing these kids and their coach. And what do we get:

 

First post, a meaningless rant about 'health and safety' for a photo shoot. Then followed by people saying the Thai Navy Seals were a bit useless and didn't know what they were doing.

 

Of course these keyboard experts already know everything about cave diving. Let's forget that cave diving is a very specialist skill, that the Navy Seal divers put in countless days of hard dangerous work, listened to advice and learned, and were an important part of the whole team. Let's also not forget that one of them died!

 

I don't know what it is about this place sometimes.
