RabC
Just to clarify, the only thing I wrote was my name at the top of a form, this form was then filled in and signed by the lady who carried out the eye tests and supervised the video presentation. NO forms are needed from the applicant, just turn up with correct paperwork.
Apiwan2
I will be going next week. I don't have any utility bills in my name. Only the tabien bahn with me as the father of my kids . Hopefully this may be enough to get residence cert. But the local kaet told me last time I done their I'D cards that I should make a yellow book. It's free and would be better for me. What's the best ? I'm here now and need my Driving licence .
MTH
I will be going next week. I don't have any utility bills in my name. Only the tabien bahn with me as the father of my kids . What's the best ? I'm here now and need my Driving licence . There have been reports of yellow books not being accepted at the LTO as proof of address. Your license should be enough to get a residence certificate at Jomtien immigration. It has your address on the back. Of course the usual copies of Passport/departure card are also required.
Apiwan2
Thanks MTH. By address on the back you mean in the black stripe ? Also I have changed address since the last licence was issued. Will try with yellow book and tabien bahn. I will be doing it here in BKK near chatujak.
MTH
Thanks MTH. By address on the back you mean in the black stripe ? Also I have changed address since the last licence was issued. Will try with yellow book and tabien bahn. I will be doing it here in BKK near chatujak. My pleasure Apiwan2. The address is only written in Thai, and is about center backside of the license. Either way, that was for getting a residence certificate at Jomtien immigration. Since you posted here in the Pattaya forum, I assumed you were renewing here. Haven’t heard about yellow book being rejected as proof of address anywhere in Bangkok, so think you should be fine there.

Popular Post oneday
Renewing a 5-year to a 5-year in Pattaya, Nov 30, 2015 My experience today. I almost had my paperwork perfect. They gave me back the copy of my 6 year old voided visa page in my passport. All they needed was the picture page and “Extension of Stay” stamp page. This is what I gave them. “Residence Certificate” from immigration I got last week. (2 each @ 250 baht each) Copy of picture page of passport (2 each) Copy of current “Extension of Stay” stamp page in passport (2 each) NOTE: This page also had my departure card on it. Copy of front and back of both licenses (2 each or one copy for each license) I was about fifth in the falang line outside, but got #103. Two people dropped out of the line for some reason. I was told to sit downstairs until my number was called and then go upstairs. Upstairs the first thing they do is check your paperwork, take your old license(s) and passport, give you a number and send you to a room. I was number #2 which was an advantage and a disadvantage. They send you into room #1 on your right to watch what I’d call an introductory video all in Thai. It consists of one lady and about 3 different monks talking; no illustrations or examples or demonstrations…just talking. After the video an employee came in and spoke to the crowd only in Thai for about 15 minutes. Around 9:30am they start calling all the people into the main room in groups of 10 by your number so I was in the first group. This is where my number was a disadvantage. In the main room they give you the color test where they point to a color and you say the color. THIS IS THE ONLY TEST THEY GAVE – no reaction test or depth of field test was given. Because I was a falang the lady made me and all other falang stand against the wall until ALL the Thais had been tested. I felt this part could have been done far differently and been far more respectful to the falang…such as telling all the falang to remain seated in the room and they would be called last. After taking the color test you go back to the room and watch another video, but first you must sign a book and place a check mark in the “car” or “bike” column or both columns for the kind of license you are renewing. The next video was done better as it was mostly a couple driving in a car and talking about proper driving. However, this video was also all in Thai, though it was sub-titled. I was in the third row back on the right and the ancient cathode-ray-tube 20” TV was up front on the left. I could barely make out a few words in the sub-titles due to the letter size and distance from the TV so I ignored the video. There was a very large projection screen at the front of the room and if they had used this I would have been happy to read the sub-titles and watch the video. After this video we were all called up one-by-one to sign our finalized paperwork and then go pay our fee at window 3. When you sign your paperwork you get your passport back. This is where my #2 was an advantage as I was the second one called up to sign the paperwork and the second one to pay my fee which was 1060 baht total or 530 for each license. After paying your fee they give you another number to sit and wait for your picture to be taken. It took about 15-20 minutes for my #86 to be called. After they take your picture they may take two or three more pictures of the next people in line and then the same lady who took your pictures calls you back to give you your new license which took a few minutes to print out. I was done about 11am so for this 5-year to 5-year renewal at the Pattaya Land Transportation office, you won’t get finished any sooner than that. One final note…, because of the reading I had done on ThaiVisa I knew to come in after my birthday so I would get a few days short of 6 years before my license expired and sure enough that is exactly what I got…a license that will expire two days short of 6 years from today in the year 2121. There is little to no chance a tourist visa will get you a renewal, but it will get you a 1-year temporary or I've read now it is a 2-year temporary. As for actually renewing, again from my reading, you may not have to do anything more than I did...watch videos and color test. From the Thai Land Transportation Department's website. Note what it says under "REMARKS" at the bottom. IN CASE OF FOREIGNER RENEW THAI DRIVING LICENCE [bY YOURSELF] FIVE-YEAR to FIVE-YEAR DRIVING LICENCE HAVE TO PREPARE THE DOCUMENTS AS FOLLOW 1. ORIGINAL FIVE-YEARS THAI DRIVING LICENCE 2. PASSPORT WITH NON-IMMIGRANT VISA (ORIGINAL AND PHOTO COPY) 3. ORIGINAL PRESENT RESIDENT ADDRESS IN THAILAND CERTIFY FROM EMBASSY / IMMIGRATION BUREAU (VALID FOR 1 YEAR) OR WORK PERMIT WITH ORIGINAL AND PHOTO COPY PROCEDURE 1) CHECK THE DOCUMENTS 2) PRINT THE APPLICATION FORM (At the Pattaya office there is no application form to fill out) 3) TAKE ONLY A PHYSICAL TEST (The eye color test in Pattaya...at least on the day I went) -TAKE A TRAINING 1 HOURS (Actually more like 2 hours and 2 video and talking by employee) -TAKE A PHYSICAL TEST (eye color test in Pattaya) -TAKE A THEORY TEST (Only if license expired more than 1 year according to remark below) -TAKE A PRACTICAL TEST (Only if license expired more than 3 year according to remark below) 4) PAY THE FEE / TAKE A PHOTO AND PRINT DRIVING LICENCE (FEE 505 BAHT AND PLASTIC SMART CARD 100 BAHT) ADDITIONAL (CHANGE NAME OR ADDRESS CHARGE 50 BAHT) (As a falang I was charged 1060 baht total for both licenses...530 each in Pattaya) REMARK : 1) IN CASE OF DRIVING LICENCE EXPIRED MORE THAN 1 YEAR - TAKE A THEORY TEST 2) IN CASE OF DRIVING LICENCE EXPIRED MORE THAN 3 YEARS - TAKE A THEORY TEST AND PRACTICAL TEST
raro
For the records.. In the unlikely event that your license gets... Ermmmm... lost, make a police report and bring this one in lieu of the miraculously vaporized license. A scan of the old license helps.
konying
This was my experience 2 weeks ago. renewing 5 years for another 5 I do have WP , so did not need residency cert Anyhow arrived at 8:30, handed over the usual copies. (note: no medical is needed) With WP, they wanted my employee tax number(this is new, never heard of read anything about that) Anyhow, called accountant, and got the number, which is also puzzling,as they simply write it down, so you could give them any number. Off to do some silly reaction test, one pedal to accelerate and next one to stop and color blind test(all at the same time, lol) Off too freezing cold room(air con super cold) Watch some silly video for about 25 mins, NO it was not stopped, it was actually a 25 min video. Off to pay the money and get a ticket, Ticket called up, make a photo and 5 mins later all done. Less than 2 hours to do all. This is in Pattaya. raro
Also for the records, the yellow housebook is not accepted. Needed to go to the immigration to get this residence certificate. To get this, you can present the yellow housebook. Makes perfect sense once you live here for a while....

pontious
I don't have a blue book. I thought foreigners cannot get it? I think he means his wifes blue book. i.e. two books both showing the same thing - one blue and one yellow. Take copies and the original books. I assume they think you could forge the yellow one but not the blue one. TIT.
TheCruncher
I don't have a blue book. I thought foreigners cannot get it? Since you have a yellow book I assume you own a property, either in your wife's name or through company route, so either of them will have a blue book. optad
Back in July 2008 I renewed my yearly license, again. In anticipation of its expiration, i recently dug it out and read it expires in November 2018. It was validated for 10 years five months and two days. Seems odd ~ ?! I am not good with this stuff but what gives since everyone is talking about five years only. Did i get lucky and do it in a window of opp or has there been a mistake? Popular Post thaiflyer1
Heres a bit of info that might help people.................wish i had known it before spending 5 hours renewing my 5yr licence today I went to renew car/bike licence but thought i/d miss the 8am rush so turned up at 10.30am after hearing other reports that this was a good time.......... might of been before 1st October this year..................... but since then, and there is a sign on the wall to the effect that there are 2 sittings per day for 5 yr renewal (didnt see anything re 1yr renewal or first time applications) ........first sitting at 10am and second at 1.30pm Of course i get there at 10.30 so miss the first sitting........she checks the documents and gives me a red queue card.............come back at 1pm she says so i had a 2 and half hour wait....eventually got out with new licences at 3pm.................... My advice would be turn up about 9.30am or 1pm..........there is a note on the sign to turn up 30mins before the sitting to have your docs checked. Document requirements havn't changed Residence Cert for each licence Passport page...1 copy for each licence Departure/ visa stay stamp.....1 for each licence Front and back of each licence...1 copy each licence My birthday was on the 11th and true to what has been written going today the 15th i got 6years before expiry..........did read on the wall however that if the renewal was after expiry then practical/written tests would have to taken so who knows.......maybe if your within a day or so its overlooked? Also read you can renew up to 3 months before........................ Hope this helps someone
LukDod
New 5-year licenses renewal - my 7-hour ordeal!!This was my third renewal of my 2 5-year licenses.Renewal was quick and easy previously, but not today!Arrived at 9:30am before the 10am time for renewing 5-year licenses. There must have been at least 200 hundred people there; all motoand car parking areas were filled to the brim.I obtained my queue ticket; 20 numbers were ahead of my number. It took anhour and a half before my number was called to go upstairs. All of my documents were in order. BTW, they _do_ accept a photo copyof the Residence certificate, which I used with my second license application. The gal inspected my docs then asked something I've never been askedfor on my previous license renewals...she wanted to see my Passport!I didn't have it with me, so moto back to South Pattaya and get mypassport and return to the DLT. It was now 11:15am. I gave the gal mypassport and she instructed me to return at 1pm. Ack!!After loitering for nearly 2-hours until 1pm,, it was back upstairs to watcha video of a few monks lecture in Thai, then a gal enters the room ofabout 50- people awaiting licensing and she goes over the traffic laws, in Thai. Finally, I'm called for testing. I've my new distance glasses with me, which Inow need and use only for driving. She administers the color test, which isno problem, until she repeatedly points out the smallest of the color dots.I can't distinguish which color she is pointing at! I fail and am told towait back in the room...more of the Thai monk video.Later, I'm called back for color testing and have the same problem as sherepeatedly points out the smallest of the color dots. Another fail and backinto the room with more of the same Thai Monk video. Gee. I'm now wishingI'd brought my reading glasses with me, as they'd have worked fine onthe short distance to the color chart.I've no car (just the license) and travel only on one of my motorcycles.I've amassed over 200K km traveling throughout SE Asia and over 1-millionmiles when I lived back home in the USA, all without ever having an accident.I'm worried now that I won't get a license, yet the gal returns to the room, handing out papers to those previously tested. I, too, am given copiesand they are for me to my to pay the fees for my new licenses! Damn, I was given a pass based only on the color test! I paid the fees:car 505, motorcycle 255 and 100-Bt for each new license. 960-Bt total.I arrived back home at 4:15pm...I was never administered braking reaction nor depth perception testsor had to take the driver's written exam. I would not have had anyproblem with any of those tests, none of them have small colored dots ;-)Go figure? I got my licenses renewed. TIT!Ironically, while awaiting 1pm to arrive, I spent some time watchingThais take their vehicle test on the DLT testng course. More than onetook over 5-minutes to complete the simple parallel parking test; similarlysome took 5-minutes, stopping and inspecting their vehicle's location,to manage to get through a narrow 10-yard long course of pylons. Of course they all passed....Hopefully, your experiences will be less stressful and time consumingthan mine was!!
