Despite Omicron's global spread, Cambodia continues to report'minimal' new cases on a daily basis.

In an incredible run of 69 days of 'new normal' low case numbers, Cambodia defied the global trend of increasing COVID cases – as the Omicron mutation spreads rapidly around the world – and recorded its lowest daily new COVID case figures (diagnosed by PCR test) since before the start of the 'February 20th Incident.'

The official daily new COVID case count (as determined by PCR test) was 14, increasing the overall number of COVID cases to 120,300.

This novel variation of COVID-19 has sparked widespread concern since it is highly transmissible, has a higher reinfection rate, and has been detected in over 40 countries, including Cambodia's immediate neighbor Thailand, as well as America, Asia, Europe, and Australia.

The Health Ministry, on the other hand, declared on Sunday that the prohibition on travellers from ten African nations entering Cambodia had been lifted.

Concerns have been expressed about the spread of Omicron in Thailand, as well as the possibility of cross-border infections.

These fears have been heightened by the revelation that Thailand had deported 30 Cambodian border hoppers, some of whom tested positive for COVID-19.

Despite the threat of Omicron, Cambodia is forging ahead with reopening, and the Royal Government's focus is now on establishing a "new normal" and reintroducing Cambodia to tourists and industry by treating lesser instances of COVID at home.

As previously stated, the dramatic drop in reported cases is due to a strategy implemented in October that excludes 'quick' testing and'mild' COVID-19 cases from the official daily case counts.

Under the prior reporting scheme, there was a general increasing tendency in the Kingdom; however, the last 69 days' data have entirely reversed this pattern, as seen in the graph below (please note that results may be up to 2 days behind):

Other statistics show that there are currently 100,452 Community Instances, with 19,848 cases being imported.

The disparity between Cambodia's COVID condition and that of Thailand and Vietnam, its neighbors, is astounding.

The numbers (see graph below) are proof of the Kingdom's comprehensive immunization drive, which has been dubbed the "Cambodian vaccination miracle."

Today, two imported cases were disclosed, maintaining the pattern of importing few instances.

Cambodia also revealed four further deaths, bringing the total number of COVID-19-related deaths in Cambodia to 2971.

As active cases continued to decline, 13 recoveries were announced, bringing the total number of active COVID cases in Cambodia to just 667.

Cambodia has now surpassed not just its close neighbors Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam (see below) in terms of vaccination rates, but also nearly every major country in the globe, including France, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Germany.

However, due to limited acceptance of the third booster dosage in Phnom Penh, the city's officials have decided to keep the third 'booster' injection campaign going indefinitely.

PHNOM PENH (Reuters): Cambodia has detected the country's first case of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus in a local woman who had travelled from Ghana, the ministry of health said.

The 23-year old woman had returned from Ghana via Dubai and Bangkok, the ministry said in a statement issued on Tuesday (Dec 14).

The woman, who was 15 weeks pregnant, had been admitted to hospital for treatment, it said.

The Omicron variant first detected in South Africa and Hong Kong last month has now been reported by over 70 countries and is probably present in most worldwide, but should not be dismissed as "mild", the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday.

The nation reopened its borders last month to vaccinated tourists after achieving one of Asia's highest Covid-19 vaccination rates, with more than 88% of its 16 million people now inoculated.
